I played pool in college some, and I recently got a table in my house. I am starting to play more and want to get a new cue. I know that picking a cue is a personal preference thing, but I was wanting some advice. I want to spend $100-$150, and I figured you guys could tell me what to look for in a cue at this price. THANKS!!

The best entry Production cue IMO!

They are the only ones I am aware of with lifetime warranty against warpage! of my selection of personal cues I own 3 McDermotts and shoot with them daily!

when I started back playing (Jan. '03) after 25 years or so, I went searching for a moderate priced cue (some say I'm cheap !). after looking at about 300 cues, there was only 2 that had that 'feel'. one was a Lucasi and the other was a Cuetec,,,,bought 'em both !

now I own the pool hall and 95% of the cues I sell are in the Lucasi line (Lucasi, Players, GW, Vintage, and Rage),,,not many Lucasi's in the $150 range, but you can find them sometimes,,,lots of the upper-end Players and most of the GW cues are in your price range.

some kind of unwritten rule about pricing cues more than 20% off retail, but if you search the net you can find a bargain,,,as for the fit and finish, the Lucasi line has 'got it right'

how about putting a little more money with it and picking up a nicer used cue?

heres the problem as i see it with buying one of the cheaper cues (not sayin lucasi, mcd arent good stick, i just mean cheaper in a money sense)......you shoot with it awhile.....then if the pool bug gets ahold of you then you end up wanting to move up and get a nicer stick.......you dont use the cheap cue any, and then when you try to get rid of it, you cant get anything for it. But lets say you spend 300 or so on a nice used schon or something......then later on if you want to sell it you can prob get your money back or maybe more, or you shoot with it and keep it cuz its a nice stick.
just my .02

where can someone buy a Schon for $300 besides a 'basket-case' on eBay that ain't worth rebuilding ? The cheapest one in my catalogs is way more than $300 wholesale !!,,,,long way up from $150 to "$300 or so"

I would disagree with ......

Well first off McDermotts are made as well as some custom cues and better than most productions! I have a D15 and D21 fron 87 and 89 respectively and both are used regularly and are shooting very well ! in my collection I own Original Palmer from the early '60s! a Falcon, Old Mali, SAMSARA that cost as much as some used cars LOL! a Szamboti, a new JACOBY! and a couple I forgot :( But my McDermotts are still used ! and the D21 is worth more now than I paid for it!

You can poick up a pretty nice Joss cue for about $250, and Joss cues have a nice hit.

Madam

Never thought I would agree with a, Fortuneteller but got to on this one. Lucasi, is the best cue made in that price range.

well actually thats just what i did.....got a nice late 80s to early 90s schon on ebay myself......2 shafts, 1 straight 1 with a slight wobble, 1 small ding in the butt, for 350. Not saying youre gonna run across one every day but its doable.

well Dr Dunc33....

I guess this cured you from asking for peoples favorite cues on aPool website you get answers all over the map but it seems that you are faced with Fury! Lucasi! and my personal Favorite McDermott for your price range ! My suggestion is now that you are narrowed down to 3 check each website get the particulars on each! Check each ones Warranty!!!!!!! and then try and find local dealers even if you decide to buy online , so you can hit a ball or two with each! they all have different manufacturing techniques and hit and feel differently and then and only then decide which one you want!

I went through the same thing...had not played for a while...picked up my 20+ year old Cuetec Graphite and got in the game...(re)caught the 'pool bug', first 'wood' cue purchase was a Fury DL...now, it has decals not inlays...but lay it on the table and you can't tell...and for $92 bucks well worth it...uniloc joint, solid hit...now about the 'pool bug'...if you love the game as I do, you will catch it and start wanting better, (more $$$ equiptment), I now own a Meucci Original, a Schon and a Instroke Buffalo 3x5, the Fury is now a break/jump cue...bottom line, get the best you can afford and if you continue to love the game you can always find something to do with that inexpensive first cue...

I'll toss out another ... if you (the original poster that is) like sneaky petes, have a look at the Dufferin Phantom. It should be under $100, and is a very solid cue, playing a lot like a one piece house cue. After that, the McDermott suggestion is a good one from my experience.

Used to play out of cue's...recently moved west...now I play out of Side Pockket...Canton Rd. Marietta...Playing this weekends tournament at cue's...are you in?

Thanks for the recommendations everyone; I appreciate the help. I think I will look more into McDermott and Lucasi cues. I live in Paducah, Ky where Buddy Hall is from; a local table/cue dealer told me that Buddy plays with a Lucasi now. Anyway, thanks again!

Buddy is a friend, drdnc33. You might consider his site, buddyhall.com . Has a lot of stuff there. Including, Lucasi and other cues. As you say, Buddy Lived in, Paducah, for many years and as you know, Metropolis, IL claims him too. Best of luck with the cue, drdunc33.

Yep I plan on it I got to get my $5 in tomorrow!

Mr Lucky

I have a McDermott, Wolf Head, with Spencer 90 on it that I have used since 1999 until I switched to my own version of a custum cue.

Anyway, does that Spencer -90- mean it was made in 1990?

It is a good cue and served me well. And I suppose its resale value would be pretty good. Whereas I recently purchased two Players cues, one at an auction and one at a garage sale for $5 each. Nothing wrong with them and they probably sold in the $60 to $80 range when new and I sold them for $40 each. It was a case of I didn't need them but couldn't pass up the bargain.
