hi I am looking for a pool cue for my boyfriends birthday:)
I don't really play much myself(because I am amazingly bad:sorry:) so I'm a little unsure what to look for..could someone please give me some pointers or suggest some good brands?
Also I was doing some research but it seems very conflicting
wood is better than graphite yes?
and are wood joins better or brass/metal joins?
heavy or light is just preference on the player? (but the weight should be evenly placed?)
2pce or 3pce?
oh and I'm not really sure what a cue costs? under 1000 would be nice:):)
sorry if you have answered all these questions before

Depends on what you're trying to look for... What does he shoot with right now? Do you happen to have a picture of it? What weight is it? Often times, you can determine what to get based on what he already has, then go up a notch or two.

I would look for a Richard Harris plain jane cue or if you want a cue with some eye appeal I would buy the Pat Diviney cue that Fast_n_Loose had for sale . Marcus is very trustworthy and I'm sure you could make arrangements to return the cue for credit towards another if it wasn't to his liking.

Other good players cues in your price range IMO . Sugertree, Kikel, MasonH, Zylr for pure customs.

You could also find a really nice Schon if production cues are your thing.

Yes, wood shafts and butts are better than graphite. Wood joints are not better than a stainless steel joint, only different....many swear by wood, others swear by SS...matter of preference.

Typically, 19oz is a good starting point for weight...it's a pretty standard weight. 2 piece cue...definitely not a 3 piece.

For under $1K...you can find a LOT! Heck, you are at the point in the $400 and up range to actually go with a custom cue. If you look in the Wanted/ForSale section, there are some really great deals to be had.

A good start would be to find out what you boyfriend's cue is like...does it have a metal joint...not including the pin (screw)...or does it have a black, white, tan, brown collar at the joint (that would be considered a wood joint)? Better yet, if you can post a pic or at least tell us what type cue it is, we may be better able to offer you more sound advice.

Thank-you foryour help Lisa, lenoxmjs & mamono:)
umm..he doesn't currently own a cue:embarrassed2: he plays about 3 times a week at the pool hall and is always trying to hide the only straight cue behind the counter..

Too Funny!

OMG!! I used to do this back in 1967 at the pool hall when I was a kid!
Thanks for the memories! WOW some things never change after all......

PS There are a couple Kikel cues currently available, I own a Kikel and have never heard a bad comment about his cues. Great playing cues...

Chelsea, you sound like a really great girlfriend. Just wanting to take that initiative is awesome. I wish there were more girls like you out there...

Do you ever go play with him at a place that sells cues? If so, maybe get him looking at some and take pointers so you can have an idea of what he likes. Also, you can shoot with his favorite house cue and check out what the weight is. It's usually stamped on the cue somewhere.

At that price-point you can get a lot of cue. If you are sure you want to spend up to that much money then maybe consider getting him a custom 'sneaky pete'. Here is a link to a site that sells really nice sneaky pete's from a well established maker (Bob Frey). They are well in your price range and there are many options to choose from.

Don't forget to save enough for a case, too! ;)

Good luck with your search-

I'd personally get ahold of Koinkid on here and get a schon or a joss cue. Great cues, at a good price. Erik Lee would be another good one to check with on the above cues. www.erikleecues.com

Sneaky's are great cues for under 500. Joss and Schon you can get a little fancier cue for under 500, and they both will be quality players. I'd stay away from other production cues for more than 250 dollars. There are plenty out there more expensive in production cues, but they won't hold their value at all. Have met very few players that don't care for schons in how they play.

Chelsea,

A good place to start might be with the cue he seems to favor; the one he hides behind the counter.
You might be able to approximate what this cue weighs by the weight stamp on it and with some help find what shaft diameter it has.

The rest of your questions are subjective (up to the player...) except possibly the 3-piece... I agree, stay away from that. Also, maybe that wood is "better" than graphite (some may disagree, but I have never met someone with a preference for graphite).

Your BF may have played with a cue that someone else owns that he "likes". I know you may have trouble asking him without letting the cat out of the bag.

There are many nice cues sold by AZ members in the Wanted/For Sale section. Also, there is probably a Billiard/Darts supply in your local area that may be of some help, too.

If you get him a production cue, McDermott and Schon are good quality and mostly American made, I suppose Schmelke, Meucci and Viking are too.

Best of luck and I hope my ramblings are of some help to you.

Have you thought of contacting a cuemaker here on the forums and getting him a gift certificate for a custom cue?

Pool players are finicky and I'd hate to see you spend close to $1k on a cue that isn't his style, is too heavy/light, etc.

You should be able to find cuemakers here that would make him THE cue he wants for less than $1k. :)

Just my opinion.

Another thought would be if the cue he is hiding and playing with now is straight...see if the room owner will sell it to you...should be pretty inexpensive. Then you can have a cue maker do a conversion to a 2 piece cue, with a nice shaft, decent ferrule and tip. Maybe add some fancy rings, and wa-la...neato gift.

Cue as a gift

Chelsea,

It is impossible for you to get the perfect cue for him.

Any cue maker will ask questions that only your boyfriend can answer.

Balance point, shaft dia. Joint material, farrel material, the type of wood used in the but & handle, these are just a few things that he may not even know himself until he discusses them with someone very experienced with making a cue.

He may not want a custom, he may like a certain brand of production cue.

Please, let know that you would like to pay for a cue that he picks out himself.

You will both be happier with the rusults.

Best of luck,

Slim

Somehow get your man to look at the cue gallery on here with you.You should get an idea when he oohs and ahs at a certain cue. Then look for that cue makers name here in the for sale forum or look him up on the web and call to find out if hes in your price range.
BTW pump him for info while you are looking.
