Help with cue value...Verl Horn

I have a Verl Horn I am interested in selling but don't really know what I can expect out of it. It was one of his infamous Balabushka copies. The butt is straight and both shafts roll flat but have a very, very slight taper wobble if you are looking for it many wouldn't even mention. Here's what I know.

  • Burton Spain forearm w/4 veneers
  • ebony points and ebony butt
  • two shafts on is about 1" shorter than the other, second shaft has seen little play, both with ivory ferrules.
  • MOP inlays on points
  • 20 x MOP inlays on butt
  • Cortland wrap
  • Cue has previously been refinished

Anybody have value opinions? Anyone interested?

I guess pictures would help

I've been looking fo this cue a lone time. I'm pretty sure i saw one go onthe 2000$ range. With this market I don know. If u come up with a number let me know. Providing it's straight. 2000$ was too much before just so you know

I'll hang onto it before I sell it for that but thanks for the info.

Is the Cortland wrap a greenish color, Verl used a greenish wrap on his older cues, I'm shooting with one of his since 1970, still hits a ton.

It does have a green tint to it and the cue hits great. I played with it for a short period before I bought my Mottey.

I dunno, but that's one fine looking cue!! I had a '70s Joss that was very similar. I'm not inferring that it's a Joss, either.

Ok. Good luck with ur sale. It is rare to see the cue for sale which should help but I have experienced a fee big makers cues not sell for a significant discount I just don't know where anything falls anymore.

Just curious ur asking what's it's worth but u won't take 2000$ how much do u think it's worth. U might have your hopes too high. Happens often.

I know what it is worth to me and I don't need to sell it. I was asking because it may be worth enough for me to push the sale. But I don't know. Right now it just stays in a case.

I agree with Dave. 2K was too high b4 and that was during good times.

Non-ivory pointed Horns don't command that much.

Sweet looking cue, but expect considerably under 2 in today's market.

I think keeping it might be your best Bet. It's a great cue. I don't care about the market really. I don't min over paying for it. I dis some homework after my first post. Some plain 4 point horns sold asking as low as 600$ and most were ivory pointed/jointed Ivory inlaid cues in the 2000-3000$ range. One grossly overpriced and will never sell. But IMO this seller is Just about ALWAYS grossly overpriced.

Guess all we can do from here is you say a number I say yay or nay and we go from there. :-)

Dave this cue has been offered as a Balabushka on ebay many many times as far back as 2003.

Here is a thread that shows the ebay actions going back to 2003, and then the last auction earlier this year.

I have a number of problems with the history of this cue, but if it is a Verl Horn which I am not certain it is, I think the price would be between $1100 and $1400 max if it is all original. First there is not a lot of interest in Horn cues, and second it appears the cue is not original, I would suspect that it has been refinished.

I recently had two Horns with a great deal of Ivory, Joints, Points, inlays and a butt cap and they were in the $1600 price range, and they were straight with two shafts.

I believe waldos offered a ivoried up horn under $2k. Scot has the same cue on his site as a horn he refinished. Prob the same cue. I'm ok with that. Also I remember mr wright having the same cue as a horn. I'm confident buying it as a horn. Like u said verl isn't the most sought after maker so... Any maker converting a Spain blank should get 1500$. That's about my range on the cue.

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like I'll just be keeping it. I wouldn't let it go for any less than $2,800. It hits too good...at least I'm not being a dick and putting it on ebay as an "unknown cue maker" :) Thanks again

lol. i think its a good choice to keep it. honestly, not being a d*ck either but you will never in this lifetime or next get 2800$ for that cue. ESP on ebay and ESP as an unknown maker. youre expectations are alittle unrealistic. never-the-less. good luck

There have been other Horn "copies" that sold for big prices. That was when they were passed off as the real deal. No longer the case now, with Balabushka's needing authentication to sell. Guys like Pete Tascarella and Barry Szamboti know what the real ones look like.

I think you're in the ball park with your pricing above. Verl Horn made nice cues in the one to two thousand dollar range. Because this is a copy of an original, I would put it in the low end of this range. The OP has an inflated value of the cue. Doubtful any collector would pay his price, but you never know. Someone might want to take it overseas and try to get lucky and find an unsuspecting buyer. It's happened before as we know.
