Although the future of the Western world doesn't hang on this....I'm curious about the correct term to use for when:

1. You shoot the CB into an OB and cause the CB to pocket a different OB. In other words, an OB is pocketed by the CB.

2. You shoot the CB into OB1 and cause OB1 to hit another OB (OB2) and pocket OB1. In this case the OB is pocketed by deflecting off another OB.

I've used the terms carom and billiard interchangably for these siturations but I suspect they aren't the same thing.

Of course, at my level of play either shot is accurately termed a "Lucky Shot" :D but that's besides the point.

Thanks.

Lots of confusion here and it's discussed every few years. My understanding is #1 is a "billiard" and #2 is a "carom" or "kiss shot".

In my opinion, they are both simple carom shots but the billiard is better used to describe cue ball caroms and the kiss more accurately describes object ball caroms.

Here are pertinent definitions from my online glossary:

billiard shot (AKA “billiard”): a shot where the cue ball is kissed or caromed off an object ball (e.g., to pocket another object ball).

carom shot (AKA "billiard" or "CB kiss shot"): a shot where the cue ball is deflected off one object ball and into another to pocket the second ball.

kiss shot (or “OB kiss shot”): a shot where an object ball is deflected off another and then into a pocket.

So 1 is a "carom" or "billiard," and 2 is a "kiss."

I play 3Cushion billiards as often as I can get to the table. I prefer it to pockets. Here are my definitions for your terms.

Carom: is when you go off an object ball instead of a rail. Doesnt matter the intended target. Just that you used the cue ball off an object ball.
Billiard: is the term used in Carom games. It is when you complete the requirement and make a point. In straight rail, it is simply caroming the cue ball off of two object balls. The game of 3C, requires that you contact 3 rails BEFORE the final contact with the second object ball.
Kiss: is when you contact the same object ball more than once. Usually in carom billiards, it happens when you contact the first object ball and puts it in motion. While the balls are still moving, it will contact your cue ball again. This is usually undesired as it normally prevents you from making a billiard (point).

Good Luck.

Ah, the Western world is once-again safe. I figured I was transposing the terms; I hadn't considered the possiblity that I left out a term entirely.

Thanks to all who replied.

I like these definitions since "billiards" and "caroms" both come from games where the cue ball hits multiple balls.

However, the situation is a little like the use of "english" which some people use to refer to any kind of spin on the cue ball but others (like me) restrict to side spin. When I describe shots in text, I try to be careful not to use the term "english" unless I make it very clear that I'm only talking about the side spin, so instead I usually just say "side spin" and avoid the ambiguity.

So.... instead of saying something like, "play the 2-5 carom", you could say, "billiard the cue ball off the left side of the 2 to pocket the 5", or maybe, "play the 2 ball to the cushion to kiss off the back of the 5 and go into the pocket" instead of "play the 2-5 kiss shot off the cushion". (Or as the old-timers might say, "Shoot the ticky.")

Ior maybe, "play the 2 ball to the cushion to kiss off the back of the 5 and go into the pocket" instead of "play the 2-5 kiss shot off the cushion". (Or as the old-timers might say, "Shoot the ticky.")
I play BCAPL so, I just say two in the corner.: Wink:

to me
a carom is one ball deflecting off another
a billiard is a score made according to the billiard game you are playing

What's up Doc ;) But your "caron" and "billiard" seems like the same definition. The only difference in the description you use is interchanging the term "kissed/caromed" and "deflected", otherwise the same thing??

Thanks BBB, nice to see you on here.

I wonder where the term "Kiss" started? I look at it as the "kiss of death" when playing 3C! But who started it and what was its history. I'm fairly sure the carom and billiard were used before kiss.
