I bought a small lathe from Bassel and I'm curious on how i can set up a taper for cutting butts. I bought the Cue Building Book From Chris Hightower and I'm still unable to cut the butts. It seems as if it is cutting too much while moving toward the joint area of the cue. if some one can give me a better explanation or if there is a video on how to do it.

If you are starting from straight stock then it will cut more at the joint end until the taper is established. Then the cut should be even across the entire piece. You need to make multiple passes to establish the taper, don't try to cut the entire piece in one pass. The video that comes with the taper shaper has a good section on setting up a taper bar. you can buy the cd at http://uniqueinc.com.

you could also try adjusting your tailstock to a shallower angle.

Taper

As a starting point .840 at the joint...1.240 at the other end///this would be a straight butt taper .400. You can adjust accordingly and reach any determined size by moving the tailstock or taper bar.

mount a dial indicator on the cross slide and tram the butt taper bar........... you should have a .200 in taper in 29 inches of travel............ that will give the most popular butt taper..................... the bar should taper out towards the slide on the head stock end.
