Here I am, my first post...

Alright...
..here goes my first post on AzBilliards. It's funny though, the way I came across AzB was by someone who single-handedly tries to destroy the rec.sport.billiard forum and have badmouthed AzB for quite some time. So naturally I thought if this fool hates the AzB forum so much, well then, it must be worth checking out. Hence, here I am.

Although I now live in California, I'm a Norwegian who partially grew up in Sweden -- and it was in Sweden where I learned to play pool. Actually, as a kid I was sort of a pool prodigy, but I blush to confess -- I have not improved since, not a single bit. I even play with the same old British made cues; 11mm, 450g, all-wood snooker cues, (the better one, I actually won playing).

A few years ago, my then girlfriend brought the cues back from my parents -- she wanted to see me play since she doubted their stories about me cleaning the pool-halls as a toddler. Well, she was right.

So now what I'd like to do is getting over this dreadful threshold and start improving my game. So if you have any ideas, feel free to contact me, or better yet; if you live in San Francisco Bay Area, why not give me some lessons.

Hi Peer,

Welcome to the forums. Read around, there are some great posters here who share their knowledge and love of the game. Ask questions on areas you have trouble with. Personally, I would get more of a pool cue with a slightly bigger diameter - maybe go to 12 1/2 mm.

I browsed your site - looks like you have cool parents! Did you meet/know Ewa? or Line Sjoersvik?

Anyway, have fun and don't take a lot of things too seriously around here. :D

Great to have you here on AZB, Peer.

Swedish, huh? Well, Ewa Mataya-Laurance, Helena Thornfeldt, and Marcus Chamat all developed their skills there. Gerda Hofstatter also spent some time developing her game there in the early 1990's.

Nice to have you here Peer. I'm also a European transplanted to Southern California. I converted from Snooker to American Pool about 5 years ago and am really enjoying it, my 8.5mm Snooker cue is languishing in a cupboard now.

If you are serious about wanting to improve and willing to invest in professional lessons I'd recommend you contact Bob Jewett who runs the SF Billiard Academy. (If you are not familiar with Bob he writes a column in Billiards Digest and posts here sometimes.)

Yea, I've been thinking of upgrading, but only if I knew what to get. I'm not into any fancy decorations and stuff -- the only thing that matters to me is how well it plays. But since a cue purchase is like a black hole to me, I have no idea how to even start looking. So if there's any honest person out there who can help me or has a good cue for sale at a fair price, I'd very much appreciate it.
