At snooker and pool such a shot is legal as long as it doesn't hit something on the rail, like chalk. As carom billiards, it is a foul for the ball to touch wood, but bouncing on the top of the cushion or rolling along it is OK.

So I'm guessing if the ball touches formica that would be loss of game (or worse)?

If it hits a magic rack is that a foul?

If it's on the rail, yes. From the current rules on the WPA website:

6.16 Ball Rack Template Foul

It is a foul when a Ball Rack Template, removed from the playing surface, interferes with the game i.e. if the template is lying on the rail and a ball (cue or object ball) touches the template that is lying on the rail.

Thanks.

I thought so. I saw it happen in a stream match and neither player nor the commentator commented on it and it definitely wasn’t called a foul. That’s why I was wondering.

The player had put it on the rail haphazardly and it was hanging off. The ball hit it and it visibly flipped up.

I saw a guy at Boulder Billiards in Tulsa makes this exact shot ON PURPOSE to make the out-hole in a golf game. One guy was cozy'd up in the six-hole and Randy(owner) made this shot to get the $$$. If i hadn't seen it i probably wouldn't have believed it possible.

I’ve seen this shot happen a few times....always seemed to be on a leather pocket
snooker table.
It happened once in a big money game....the non-shooter tried to grab it....
...luckily, he missed stopping the ball.
I was holding the stakes...I told them after the match, if the guy had’ve touched the ball,
I would’ve ruled it in the pocket, an outside person can’t interfere with a potentially legal
shot.....I was glad I was there...could’ve been a fight.

Anybody notice that in the video you can see about two thirds of the table and the only
other ball visible is the blue ball?
....the other balls, at least five, must be clustered a bit.

PT:

I think he just potted the brown ball, not a red. So, it's possible that the only remaining balls are the blue, pink and black with the latter two being out of view.

Thanx, Roger....I took a second look, it is indeed the brown ball.

...and I don’t have the excuse of mild color blindness....I’m just an idiot....:o

Here is a video of the shot. I suspect that particularly galling to his opponent (Nigel Bond) was the position on the blue.

That seems to be from the 2007 World Championship.

It was definitely a desperation shot no doubt. Guy in the out-hole was probably gonna win so Randy just basically gave it the "why not-f^*k it" stroke and made it. Looked exactly like the shot in the clip. They were using pool balls and i don't know if that made it any more/less crazy but it sure jarred all us sweaters for sure.

I've made this exact shot (not on purpose obviously) and seen it more times than I can remember. Some tables are more prone to this shot happening than others and I used to play on one such table a lot (I think one of the corner pockets was too tight). I saw a much more extreme variation of it where the ball flew into the side pocket without touching anything. THAT was impressive.

An old pool table in old pool hall had a defective side pocket facing that was incorrectly cut. It would frequently launch the ball into the air, then usually down into the pocket again. People would always be surprised and entertained when it happened, but sometimes the ball would be lauched dangerously into the room. A very flamboyant player was playing and on the hill fired a shot into that pocket from a narrow angle. The ball was lauched up into the air, back onto the playing surface, then spun back into the pocket. His opponents facial expression changed 4 times in 2 seconds.
