Herman Rambow Cue Restoration ?

Phil Ross,

Those 3 cues are excellent quality cues and probably wonderful to play with. Keep them original unless there are problems that need to be fixed so the cues are playable and stable. Your Rambow is awesome, especially having Rambow's signature on it. Those Spains are even better examples of historical work. You certainly have great taste. I wish I had the ability to pick winners like you have when I was younger!! Geeeesshhh!!

Thank for sharing your players, WOW!!

Very nice,
John

You might be looking at $2500-$3000 imho to the right collector. A dealer would probably offer you 20% less. It is a very nice original cue, and I wouldn't dream of having any work done to it. You just need to find the right buyer. Not sure where you are located but I would certainly wait until Jan-Mar and maybe have someone try to sell this for you at the Derby event (KY) or Super Billiards Expo (PA).

I would agree with the Sean's pricing above - exactly what I was thinking. Dealer wholesale $2,000 - cash retail $2500 - $3000. While I think the Blue Book has it right on a lot of cues, is was quite a bit off real world Rambow pricing.

Chris

Ps. I don't think the market is soft at all on these historic collectible cues. They've really been popping lately. This is about where the market has been on Rambow's. Two years ago they weren't breaking $2,000 on E-bay.

I am absolutely in agreement with Chris and Sean on the price range. Look at the last (Second Edition) Blue Book and I think you have a legitimate Rambow section. What transpired with this last edition, I don't know, but it sure seems out of line with reality. It's kind of messed up the Rambow market, too, as everyone thinks owning one will be that "early retirement or the kid's college fund". Like Chris said, two years ago, you'd have a few floating around at any given time less than $2k. It seemed that $1,200-1,500 was the standard price for your typical Hoppe or simple Rambow with the rounded ivory buttcap like Phil's. If you had Rambow's name and some initialed shafts, you generally got the $2K or a little better...

As for the comment about "everybody trying to fleece the unsuspecting" on this board, that couldn't be farther from the truth! There are a few bad apples, just like every other group in the world would have, but for the most part, you have some really good and knowledgeable people helping you with this, Phil.

Good luck on your sale!

Steve

Agree with Hunter on the fleecing. If a potential seller posts a cue and simply jumps on a first offer, shame on them for not doing more homework, but it does tend to lower the level of trust overall. I consider this forum a much better venue to buy/sell/trade cues than a forum like ebay, but any forum will have its drawbacks. I think what some people consider fleecing or lowballing by dealers is somewhat jealousy. They simply wish they could pick up some cues as cheaply as the dealers do and make money on the side.
