I got a question for you all with high end custom cues , like a Southwest for example.

Do you use them or are they just for collecting?

If you got your hands on one that has never been chalked would you use it ?

Me personally i'm not buying a cue to look at and hope it gets more valuable. They're tools to be used. Feel same way about cars. You see these beautiful trailer/garage queens. WTF?? Meant to be driven.

I collect 1 or two a year. Never the super high end, but i like to try different makers to see how their stuff hits. I alway play with what i get.

I keep it a hobby, meaning i try to break even but will take a loss for a friend who likes it more than i do.

You might lucky and make a little on the odd cue, but really this an underfunded sport and expecting to make money at is silly.

But at the end of the day do what you enjoy. If just like having a fancy cue and want to keep pristine do it. Just dont expect to retire off it ;)

I play with all of my cues. I probably would not buy an unused show queen because the shafts are definitely going to get dirty. I keep good care of my cues, but they are all used.

Yes and Yes. I own a Southwest and I play with it. The reason I bought it is because I love the way they hit. Odered it with the original SW tapers on the shafts (very stiff).

I have several nice cues. Play with them all at different times and places. I am more careful with the expensive ones but they go to leagues and local tournaments.. I don't buy them expecting to make a profit or to impress anyone..

I have one or 2 cues that I won’t screw together. They are one off Szam’s which are brand new. Otherwise I’ll play with every cue I own.
Dick Lane has two fancy Szams. One he used the other, its twin, is still un-hit. Lucky in Japan offered him 30G's for the pair 25yrs ago.

To me, 50% of my interest in owning a custom cue is to see how it plays. The other 50% is split between appreciating the unique construction of the cue and the appearance of the cue. I personally could never own a custom just to look at it. I rotate playing with my current customs and did so with any of the very many that I have owned over the past 20 years or so. Usually it takes me one session to get used to the nuances of any cue and two full sessions to be 100% confident in using the cue for a competitive game of consequence; based on all of it's playing characteristics.

It is a wonderful hobby- sometimes just as enjoyable to me as playing the game itself. Thankful that I was fortunate in life to be able to count custom cues among many hobbies that I have pursued. Some people gasp at the idea of how much I may spend on "just a pool stick" - but there are many hobbies way more expensive than cues- so it is all relative to the one doing the enjoying.

^^ this is pretty my take also. For me the entire point is to play with them. I have my own prefs in a cue, but I’m a sampler, and like to explore how different styles feel & play. I don’t go for anything flashy or exotic, rings, boxes, inlays, etc - just good players, never saw a point to dressed up cues, and keeps exploration overhead more reasonable.

The one cue I have that’s never been screwed together is a Barry “A Tribute to My Dad” inscribed on it, it’s about the fanciest Barry ever. He built me a generic shaft that I have put on every Szam I have(that it fits) except that one.

The 6pt & 8pt Gus’s I’ve played with both. The 6pt had 3-4 shafts and was used by someone for years. It’s a well used cue. The 8 is pretty worn as well, both are early 6&8 pt Gus’s.

I have a few “inventory” cues that I’ve kept brand new for resale purposes.

If ya own them, use them

Well what is High End, money or fancy❓

My Cues are Titlists, no foo foo. They get played with.

Been on Southwest list sine 2007, if I ever get call, will order Plane Jane.

Not sure on Wood, price will help make decision.😁
