High run imminent?

I got my high run (55) in May, and since then I've been playing a 14.1 League. When I got that run, I would sometimes get a 30 in a match, but not regulary. Usually a 20ish, more often than not, not much higher than 15.

The last three months in my 14.1 League, I've got over 30 most matches, and over 40 twice. I just feel as if something big is on the way. I've often heard it mentioned that your high run is usually double what you consider a good run in a match. My 35s and 40s are effortless at the moment. Did anyone else feel like they were on a threshhold? The most important thing is I am improving, and that my average run is creeping up, but if I can just go out and run a 70 or something ... it'd put me on a whole new level.

Certainly sounds like you are playing well and on the edge of a high run for sure. Those 30' and 40's are nothing to sneeze at and if your doing that consistanly your playing well. Your high run will come when you are focused only on the table and nothing else is in your mind, going from shot to shot with a purpose on every shot and seeing the patterns well.

Congrats and your progress and keep it up!

Imo if you feel that you are "on the threshold" of something great...then you surely must be...

Good luck...

Hobo,
I have felt the same way on several occasions over the past few years. I ran a 44 about 3 years ago; felt like I could progress easily. Despite hard work, regular practice, and regular lessons; did not improve upon it until this year.

I think that just playing may not be enough to insure improvement (though it certainly is possible; I won't rule it out). I feel strongly that if a player continues to try to identify his weaknesses, then work diligently on improving them; improvement is sure to follow. I just don't know how quickly to expect it; but I DO expect it.

Do you have a regular program of practice (I know you have great players to help you identify your weaknesses)? Good luck to you.

P.S. - I'll bet you have a similar fantasy to mine. I regularly play with some champion players. Everytime I get within 50 or 60 points of victory; I feel that I definitely am capable of running out the game (have not done it of course); and would rather have a high run in such a circumstance than in practice or a less meaningful league match. I did run a 42 and out this year; which is definitely my best league performance so far; but it was not against one of the pro players.

I have to tell you that I felt somewhat similar 2 or 3 months ago but on a little lower level. Was running 20s and 30s every match and they felt easy.

Lately it's more like teens and the occasional 20. In a rut, but hope to get out.

I know that what and how we feel are probably individual things and what one person feels is holding back a run may not be what another's reason is, but I'd like to share what I think holds me back.

My high run to date is 78. I stopped playing pool all together for more than 10yrs. After being egged back by a good buddy who wanted someone to beat on, (since he never really stopped playing at all) I found I was playing rather well after the layoff.

My first game, second inning I ran a 37 and later in the game a 28. I beat my buddy handily and after that was running only slightly into the second rack.

I had another old friend who owned a pool room a half hour away from me. I went to visit and chat with him. I asked if anyone enjoyed straight pool and he told me there were a few guys. One guy was good, and the other much better and in his younger days ran 100.

I met and played the first guy and got out with 3 innings in the high 30s and beat him. Since then I have been playing to his level and gone back and forth.

The other guy I met later. Very nice guy. In our first game he won the toss, I broke and he ran 33 on me off the hop. I returned a 52 on him immediately and we went back and forth with me ending up winning the game.

We have had a few games since with any high runs. For me, DESIRE is one of my biggest roadblocks Even though I always end up mad at myself for not performing to the level I know I can, for some reason I can't muster the desire, drive, and focus I need to make high runs, only what I know is good enough to win. :(

Now some may say you need to gamble. I'm 56, I don't need anyones 20 or 50 dollar bill. IMO it makes for lack of future players to enjoy the game with. I did my share of gambling 35 yrs ago, so I don't believe that would spark the killer instinct.

I'm not good enough to run high numbers without seriously bearing down, and I just don't have the desire anymore. Its crazy, cause like I said, I always end up mad at myself when I perform to a lesser level than I know I'm capable of.

It seems, when I find the other players speed, I meld down to it. :(

I'm gonna redefine what I want to get out of pool this year, and spend more time players genuinely quality players. I am extremely fortunate to be in an area where there are some great players that I can learn a wealth of knowledge from. It's all areas of my game improving. I'm 17-2 in APA this season and the two losses were by one point in 9-ball.. something is going on..

One of my 50s was an out. I was up 25-23 in a race to 75 when my opponent misses. I ran the last 8 of that rack, and then went to the restroom. I distinctly remember thinking I need 42 more to win, which was three whole racks and would get me to 50. I did exactly that! :)

Still, I played a B class 14.1 event last month, and never ran over 22 in three matches...
