Hello denizens of 14.1,
I haven't popped by in a long time, mostly having been on the move a lot in the past few years, due to work and other things. At one point, I was living in a northerly community with nowhere to play, so I didn't even open a case for nearly two years. This all changed in September, when I relocated to larger centre, and started a home-based business...
I was looking for a quiet apartment community, and I found one. The bonus is that the building has a social room in the basement, which contains a pool table. It doesn't seem to see much use, so I can drop in whenever I want, and thus far, in two months, have yet to see anyone else on it. I spent most of September relearning what a pool cue felt like, and enjoying how much pool balls prefer to not go into pockets.
I took a lunch break today, and set up a few racks of 14.1. I was feeling good, and what do you know: I hit a personal high of 36, which is rather an improvement on my previous high of 21. Sweet!
Full disclosure: this was on an 8ft table. However, this is a table with destroyed rails and snooker-style pocket jaws, not to mention the lovely tendency it has of stopping balls dead in certain areas, and letting them run f.o.r.e.v.e.r in others (Level? No. Not at all.) Yeah, it's a gaffe table, but it's free, always available, and it is going to help keep me in stroke through a long winter.
Was it a pretty run? No. Patterns? I have none. The only thing that saved me a number of times was being able to pocket balls. Anyone who knows and loves straight pool would have been cringing - I certainly was. But hey, I have a lot to learn, and I want to keep at it.
So, while Mosconi's record is in no immediate danger in my neck of the woods, I was pretty pleased to get those 36 balls. Can't wait to give it another go
