I was playing in a weekly local $10 BarBox 8-ball tourney one Friday night a few years ago. Race to 5 dbl elim, one race to 7 in the finals.
With about 20 players in this thing, I lost my first match to a total banger and came thru the losers side to get back to the finals against a decent player.
Now I have to say, on this night I just didn't care. I was just shooting at balls, no real motivation since I was the prohibitive favorite (my least favorite position). I mean they almost didn't even let me play. Which usually puts me in a negative frame of mind to begin with.
Anyway, this player I'm up against in the finals asks me for the 8 (and he can't win) every time I ask him to gamble. So, as it turns out, he gets up on me 6-0 going to 7.
He's being a gentleman, no woofing, no BS, just playing well.
I'm talking to myself now, you can't go out like this. 7-0? Cmon man, to this guy? Puleeze.
At 6-0, he doesn't make a ball on the break, next time he shoots, it's 6-5 (I didn't make a ball on the break). He's done. Shoots the first shot into the rail. I run that rack and break and run the next to win 7-6.
Now as to the why this is my favorite win. I found out that night that I really do have another gear.
