Highest and/or Favorite Tournament Finish and WHY?

I won both the 8-ball and 9-ball open divisions for my biggest tournament wins. Spending a week in Vegas with my friends playing pool and hanging out.....Great! Coming back from the one loss side in both divisions to beat the same guys that sent me to the losers side (Craig Riley aka "The One" in the 9-ball division)........Priceless!!

Reverend Dave

Grrr, I thought you'd stopped posting Dave! :D

You sure played well that week, very much deserved. Did you go back this year or did marriage put an end to your glory days?

I have nothing to crow about because of Dave lol

In an earlier post he said he couldn't attend this year's tournament because of his 8 month old son. :D

I was playing in a weekly local $10 BarBox 8-ball tourney one Friday night a few years ago. Race to 5 dbl elim, one race to 7 in the finals.

With about 20 players in this thing, I lost my first match to a total banger and came thru the losers side to get back to the finals against a decent player.

Now I have to say, on this night I just didn't care. I was just shooting at balls, no real motivation since I was the prohibitive favorite (my least favorite position). I mean they almost didn't even let me play. Which usually puts me in a negative frame of mind to begin with.

Anyway, this player I'm up against in the finals asks me for the 8 (and he can't win) every time I ask him to gamble. So, as it turns out, he gets up on me 6-0 going to 7.

He's being a gentleman, no woofing, no BS, just playing well.

I'm talking to myself now, you can't go out like this. 7-0? Cmon man, to this guy? Puleeze.

At 6-0, he doesn't make a ball on the break, next time he shoots, it's 6-5 (I didn't make a ball on the break). He's done. Shoots the first shot into the rail. I run that rack and break and run the next to win 7-6.

Now as to the why this is my favorite win. I found out that night that I really do have another gear. ;)

Here's your chance to brag! What's your highest and/or favorite tournament finish and, if it's a favorite, why?

I have two:

Once I won three tournaments on the same day. Won a 9b barbox tourney at about 3 a.m. Friday night. Played in a big table 9b tourney the following morning, won that about 5 p.m. and then played a barbox 8b tourney that night and won, finished up about 2 a.m.

The tourney I'm most proud of winning though, was the Thursday night open no handicap big-table 9-ball tourney at Family Fun Center in Denver. Opened up with a hill-hill win over a lady touring pro. The next match I played a guy who played perfect against me, beat him hill-hill. Worked my way through the winner's bracket through Champion after Champion, finally facing the pro again in the finals and won the whole thing.

The thing that sticks out to me most was what Terry McFadden said to me at the end. I said "I feel like I'm starting to play pretty good." He said "You've been playing pretty good for a while, I think the difference is that you're starting to figure out how good you really are."

Cheers,
RC

You win that tournament, you've done something. Arguably the toughest weekly tournament in the country. I've won it once or twice as well. We probably know each other. I see from your profile you now reside in CA? Care to share your name?

I will if you will :)

Actually, my name is posted all over here so it doesn't matter, Regas Chefas. Played a lot in Denver in the late 80's and early nineties while in college and then while working, but since have been a high-tech hobo roaming around the world until settling in CA and getting into Real Estate.

When I won the FFC tourney I was living in Colorado briefly again in 2000. I think it's the only time I've played that tourney. Haven't wanted to play it since because I didn't want to screw up my record....LOL...

If you don't want to post it, pm me with your name.

Cheers,
RC

Nice to meet you Regas, I'm Robert Rodriguez, lifetime shortstop. As it turns out, we never met. Looks like I moved to Denver soon after you left. The FFC tourney is still going strong. Whole new crop of Denver's best, and some old school players make it the toughest $20 tournament I've ever played in. Terry still has Gold Crowns, Centennials and tight pockets... Pure heaven.

Las Vegas, 1991, maybe 92, not sure. All of the champions were in town for the Challenge of the Champions at the Mirage, I believe. Anyway, Buddy Hall, Jose Parica, Ralf Souquet, and probably a few more that I don't remember right now, were all at the Cue Club for a tournament. I beat Buddy, then Jose, and then Ralf in the finals. Then, I flipped a coin for the winnings, which was $500, and won that too. Pfft, I thought for sure there would be an invitation in my mail box the next day for the Mirage tournament.

P.S. This is my second favorite though, with the Lake Havasu 8 Ball Open being numero uno.

The first and only tournament I've ever won. It was a weekly 8ball bar tournmament. I won 35 dollars. I came in 2nd and 3rd, the next 2 weeks.

I once won a tournament against someone who plays for a living. They only thing is - he played one handed and the score was 7-6 ... I didnt know if I should have been happy or not. He happened to miss on the 9 and left it hanging in the pocket.

Good to meet you Robert. Next time you get to the Fun Center, tell Terry and Rene hi for me. And David Gomez too if you happen to see him.

I miss everybody there. I think about the pool scene in Denver often. Denver in the early 90's was the best pool scene I've been in. Tournaments every single night, tons of gambling and good players everywhere.

Cheers,
RC
