Hmm ...

Chess tactics can at times can boil down to memorization. That can apply to pool but striking a cue ball leaves that extra variable that leaves even the best player with an additional margin of error.
 
Chess grandmaster Savielly Tartakower once said, “The winner is the player who makes the next-to-last mistake.”

Wonder if that would apply to one-pocket?

Sounds like he overlooked the possibility that the person who makes the next-to-last mistake could also be the person who makes the last mistake.

Or maybe he means that every move is a tiny mistake and they just pile up until something gives. That's how it feels to me anyway.
