holding chalk on a tip

I have just replaced my break cue tip and I was wondering what is the best way to get it to hold chalk more effectively any ideas?.

You need to say what kind of tip you are talking about. Also, since it is a breaker, you don't need it to hold chalk like a playing cue.

Yeah, definitely more info needed.

If it's a leather tip, scuff it/tap it up a bit.

If it's phenolic, get some circular grooves cut in it by a repairman with a lathe.

personally, i moisten the tip somewhat by putting my cue under my lip for about 10 seconds. it only lasts for 2-3 breaks (depending on how fast you run out) so you have to redo it. this way, you dont have to damage your tip by scuffing it or scoring it.

It was suggested that I scuff my phenolic tip with #6 sandpaper. It made a significant difference, although someone said that if my stroke was competent chalk is not necessary.

This is true. You won't even notice the absence of chalk when your stroke is dead on. I've never chalked my j/b... so technically I could sell it as "never chalked" lol... but of course I would never sell it ;)
