I make my own featherstrips and have always used Poplar with good results. Does anyone else make their own and what kind of wood works best for you?
 
I generally use poplar too........tried using others but for some reason seem to keep stocking up on poplar. must be a trend.lol
 
I make mine out of poplar also. Most of the time I use the fall down off the wood I am milling for subrail rebuilds. I round the bottoms over like the Brunswicks as well.
 
I prefer bass wood, they plane much better, they are easy to cut on the ends, they are free of knots and because they are more flexible I find hey break less. I'm not putting the poplar down, I just prefer the bass wood.

Jay, I agree with all of the good points you make about the basswood, only problem is.... Where do you buy basswood lumber and how does it compare cost-wise to poplar?
 
Can you guys give any tips how to make the feather strips? Do you have some kind of machine or do you have them different sizes on stock?

Hey there Jack... it occurred to me that I've stockpiled a little roughsawn basswood for hand-carving purposes. I obtained my pieces from broken wood pallets for free. Many cargo pallets use basswood, oak and pine. It's an easy wood to pick out from the others.
