Home Table - APA or BCA rules?

9-ball... Texas Express

10-ball... same except for obvious change to 10-ball being game ball

Exception: When prepping my buddy Jeff for the US Open 10-Ball Championships, we use the BCAPL rules for 10-ball.

Wife and I play BCA together - so we play BCA at home. Years ago when I played APA and had a table at home it was APA + call pocket.

What rules do most people go with for general home play?
Obviously best to clarify at the start of play but still curious as to what rules the 'general' public are most accustomed to; APA or BCA?

When my friends come over we pretty much play BCA rules.

But, sharking is allowed and encouraged....LOL
If you break and run at my place, you have run the gauntlet and survived.
Everything short of touching the person is allowed.

Unless you are inviting non-acquaintances to challenge you in your house, just use the same set of rules that you use when you are just hanging in the bar with your friends.

Thanks for all the responses. I've also been reading more here and on-line.

Have a couple more questions.
They say there's no such thing as a 'stupid' question...not so sure about that...

BCA rules questions:
9-Ball
I'm not seeing anywhere in the BCA rule book that states 9-ball is a call shot game.
Obviously must strike balls in ascending order but is it a called shot game regarding the designated pocket?
Assuming a designated called pocket is the rule; what's the procedure if the correct object ball is pocketed in the wrong pocket?
Foul and then does ball stay down or is it spotted?

One more basic question:
When growing up as a banger and just a punk playing with friends we always understood the rules for a scratch in 8-ball was to put the ball in the kitchen behind the head string. I now see it is BIH except for a foul on the break.
We're we wrong many years ago (Mid 80's) or is this a rule change?

Thanks for putting up with the novice here

Well, not exactly. When I'm playing my wife on our home table, we use APA rules because that's the only league she shoots in and the only rules she's familiar with. Just about all other people that come over we use BCA rules, unless we use APA rules for the very same reason I use them with my wife.

Maniac...it is your duty as a husband, pool player and defender of all things good to teach your wife the rules of the BCA. It's not like it is a difficult transition, but an definitely important one.

We were all novices at one time or another so....no problem.

BCAPL 9-ball rules: not a call shot/pocket game. Slop counts, much to many player's chagrin.

BCAPL 8-ball rule that went into effect 6/01/2010: If breaker scratches on the break, the incoming player gets BIH anywhere on the table.

Some leagues (APA come to mind) still make you take BIH in the kitchen behind the headstring. You weren't doing it wrong in the 80's, just doing it according to the rules at that time.

Only with a scratch on the break. All other scratches are BIH anywhere, in APA 8-ball.

I know that's what you meant, but I thought I'd help ya clear it up.
