Hooked on One Pocket

Some of you might remember, a few weeks ago I was posting here and at onepocket.org about how to learn the game, ways to practice it, because at the time, I didn't know what to do like 90% of the time. Well just after a few sessions with some local top players, playing cheap ($5-10 per game) and playing them with no spot, I think I'm really getting the hang of the game. Of course every time I play, I lose, but a few games here and there I was kind of proud about some of my moves and banks. Each session I learned a few shots I didn't know. I also picked up some one-pocket tapes, and learned a few moves also. Now I'm playing local guys at the poolhall who normally could give me 10-8, and I'm playing them even and winning. It seems like a few things clicked in my head over the last few weeks. There are some days, where I just can't seem to concentrate, and I play just like I did before I started learning. This game is like chess, and if I'm not thinking ahead, I get my ass handed to me. I'm proud to say that I'm hooked on one-pocket, probably the most interesting game of pocket billiards.

Glad to hear you are improving at one pocket.I've been hooked on one pocket for years and love it:D

Excellent, another pool player has seen the light - the One Pocket light......Welcome to the world of expanded consciousness. ^_^

Careful...... one pocket can be very addictive. I am always glad to hear of new players being drawn into this amazing game. Welcome!

It's good to hear someone else picking up one pocket. I've been trying to play the 4 main pocket billiard games (8, 9, 14.1, and 1-hole) to expand my horizons. There are little things in every game that can help overall.

I have been learning one pocket slower than I'd like to, but it's fun to try. I figure for having only played pool seriously for about 1-1.5 yrs., I shouldn't be ashamed for where I am, ability wise. For a lowly APA player, I think I do well to dabble in all games...most of the other players around are also APA players, and they won't go near 14.1 or 1-hole.

Democrats Make Better One Pocket Players ??

A local resident of some one pocket & pool playing fame (was known across the country iand is mentioned in either Winnng One Pocket or Shots Moves and Strategies) feels very strongly that Democrats make better one pocket players than conservative Republican types.

He can go on for hours on the subject. He says he was trying his best to be a liberal until that ^#@! Clinton came along and he just couldn't keep it up - ha!!

I will not go near 14.1 unless I'm in stroke. I can't stand it when I'm not playing good. On days when I'm in stroke, I either practice 15ball rotation or 14.1. After watching Jim Rempe's 'How to run 100 balls', I've been doing alot better at the game. My high run now is 42, and the pockets were pretty tight. My biggest problem is memorizing what spin to use on certain break shots, so I don't lose the cueball. Too often I find myself way up table or dead in the pack after the break. Even when I visualize what the cueball will do, I'll run into the wrong ball in the pack and everything goes haywire. Great game, however.

Now you are officially an old fart like the rest of us one pocket players.

That's totally inappropriate. I like to consider us younger one-pocket players as new farts, not old farts.

Welcome to the club. 1hole is definitely my favourite game. I wish there would be some old farts here to play against and learn the finer moves of the game... so few 1pocket players here in Finland... sigh. :(

So the new farts hit you straight in the face and you get that sudden feel of being suffocated but those old farts slowly creep all over you and before you notice what's going on, you're a goner ? Right ? :p

I see my fart reference is spinning out of control like my cueball on the snap.

You've brought joy to all flatulence-loving people here with your fart reference. :D

I love 1pocket. I started playing in a local 1pocket tournament at my pool hall. Which the tournament will draw out every wednesday Alice Rim, Cliff Joyner, Paul Song, and many other very talented players. Infact I've only played in 2 tournaments ever (Excluding APA league) and both were 1pocket. What a way to start out.

Yesterday they had 25 entries into the tournament. They play on 8 double shimmed K-steeles. There is a handicapping system. 1-15 with Cliff Joyner being 15+4. I know APA 8s who are ranked a 4 in this tournament. I told them to rank me higher than I should be which is a 7. I get killed every match but I learn a lot. I would also consider myself the weakest player in the tournament. But again I don't mind. I enjoy being around better players and I'm tired of league play. So this is perfect for me.

Now if I could only find some straight pool tournaments here in the land of redneck 9ball.

P.S. No matter how old I get I know one of the definets in life for man is that Farts will always be funny. And I'll never pass up an oportunity to pull someones finger.

Smittie,
Can you elaborate more on the handicapping system? I ask because if its doable, I would try to get someone down here in South Florida interested in doing a regular tournament using the system.

I do the same thing and people look at me funny, but it's cheap so I don't mind. I also agree with you about the "some days", it's more noticable in this game than in 9b or 8b. If you're off, you feel like you've never played the game before. It's really tough when that happens but then I bounce back and play good again soon enough so I just write it off to growing pains. It's honeslty the only game I want to play, I'm always asking everyone around town to play. I'll even skip a tournament to match up at 1p occasionally.

I'm not sure of how the system works. It's not as elaborate as the APA or BCA systems. They will generally ask you if you know anybody in the tournament. If you do they'll ask them and they'll take a guess at what you should be. So it's not an exact science.

Another thing that is difficult is the pool hall I play at has many top notch players. I'd say outside of league play on the other tables (about 20) 1/3 of the people playing are playing 1pocket for fun/gambling anyways. So our average might be much higher than averages elsewhere.

I think onepocket.org has a handicapping system you can use.

Best of luck and start it if you can. I want more 1pocket players out there.

welcome to onepocket.........
