Dragon Promotions should be commended (once again) for succeeding in having a WPA World Championship 14.1 Tournament in the summer of 2008.
Yes, there are always gripes and complaints about the details, but it is better than the alternative. Whatever keeps it alive!

Start putting some time in at running racks Thorsten, Tony, Mika, et al !

I'll second that =)

I'd love to see straight pool get more popular. Dunno if it is, but I'd like to think these world championships are getting some deserved attention.

Does anyone know when and where this is going to be held? DP's site doesn't have anyhing listed yet.

If you do a search on this forum for "Korean Dragon" member, I think he posted that it was going to be held at Comet Billiards in Parsippany, New Jersey.

It's a very cool pool room, lots of room between the tables, a real pool player's dream venue. :)

I would strongly recommend if you are traveling there to NOT stay at the Quality Inn which is one lodging facility nearby. It stinks, has undesirable characters running throughout the halls day and night. I never slept a wink when we went there. There are other hotels nearby which are safer.

Thank you JAM for the heads up on the accomodation, as I'm looking to come over and play in one of the qualifiers, but I would prefer it if the tournament was completely open and just have that the the best player wins :)

What are your thoughts on this people? :)

Willie

P.S. Jam, do you have a link or any pics of the poolroom that the event is looking to be held?... I'm gonna start getting everything sorted out now, to attend and compete in the event :)

There has been a great debate about the pros and cons of a completely open event on the forum in the past.

LOL! :D I am the wrong person to ask on this topic!

However, everything taken into consideration, it is nice to see the straight pool enthusiasts have an event they can look forward to, and everybody did get paid! :D

You know, I think I just may, but I will have to search for them.

The room has a very high ceiling, and I love the color scheme of burgandy and green. There is a very cool juke box with a wide variety of tunes, but during the competition, the volume is turned on very low. There is a lot of space between each table, which is great for the competitors not having to worry about bumping into another player on an adjacent table.

The staff at Comet Billiards is first class. They are good pool people who go out of their way to make everybody comfortable. I do not think you will be disappointed when you go.

Just make sure you book a room at a NICE hotel nearby. I still have nightmares about that Quality Inn. There was an inch gap underneath our hotel room door, and I could hear people standing by our room talking. There were undesirable characters roaming the halls throughout the night, talking very loudly, as well as out in the parking lot. I was scared and couldn't sleep at all that night. The room was dirty and smelly, too. NEVER AGAIN!

It sounds like the Quality Inn, is about as much use as a fart in a space suit, are there any local hotels that have a games room in them?

How many tables are there in Comet Billiards?... are they Diamond, Brunswick, Gandy "Big G", etc?.... What ball sets are used, SAP's or BC's? :)

It's always good to be able to know of a top class room and to find out what equipment they got :)

Thank you very much JAM for looking for pics of the venue, I would really appreciate it, as Im sure quite a few others would appreciate it too :)

I'm seriously getting pumped up about this event, even though I'll be travelling from Northern Ireland on my own expences to play, (Unless I can get sponsorship, which is impossible in this country) but it'll be worth it :)

My Irish eyes are smiling! I'm rooting for you already to win! :)

Here's a link to the pool room. There's a few pictures at the top. The tables look to my eye as if they are Brunswicks, though I can't tell which models.

I love Ireland. I hope you enjoy your time here in the States. I may just have to hook you up with my friend Frankie White who lives near Comet pool room. He will be sure to steer you to all the right places for food, lodging, and other fun activities. WELCOME TO AMERICA!

Thank you JAM, I really appreciate it and it's great to see some great fellow Irish people in the USA :D

I'm seriously looking forward to coming over to compee and to get to meet alot of the great players and characters alike :)

That'd be awesome, thank you, I'm hoping that I may be able to attend the full length of the tournament, (Qualifiers and the main event) but I'll have to see how it goes, but in saying that, it'll be great to hook up with yourself and a few others there :)

Thank you once again and feel free to give me a hollar anytime :)

I have worked and also play out of Comet Billiards. I have been to almost every pool room in NJ, and NY. This room bar none is "THE BEST". The room owner Bill has set this room up with tourny scheem in mind. Plenty of space in between tables, brand new GoldCrown IV's, and the best cloth and balls. You cannot miss out on this event. I can personally assure you that this will be one of the best tourny's that you have ever attended. NO REFUND!!! LOL LOL

Hey Frank, how ya doin buddy? :)

Sounds good buddy, I was looking at the website and the table rates seem pretty good too, I'm looking to make the trip over for the entire W14-1C, but will have to see how things go over the next 2 months, depending on what the tournament set up is going to be for the '08 event :)
