I have been thinking about getting a HT for while. I can buy a wrapless Schon H4 for $600 or with leather for $700. Both are bumper-less. I would most likely be happy with either one. I can return it if I do not like it for any reason.
My next question is who makes these for $700-$1000. If you were having one made who would you choose as the maker? Just looking for suggestions. Thanks.

cuemakers

I would stay with the 'Old School' guys.

I am using your price range as major factor. The other is playability.

There are a few Maryland based cuemakers that can do this well
  1. Bob Frey
  2. Leon Sly
Leon is a AZ member.
I forgot Mike Lambros, he is also out of Md.

Another 2 guys that I would consider are Pat Diveney and Darrin Hill.

I would second Leon Sly. I just bought one of his cues and it is great!
Leon is very easy to work with and love to talk pool.
Lee Peppers is another cue maker who makes amazing cues although I don't think he is taking orders anymore. Good luck with your search, I am sure you will get a ton of advice here.

Jensen

Let's not forget about Jensen cues. For a few hundred more you can have a custom Hoppe that plays lights out. If interested in this one, PM me and we might be able to strike up a deal. This is a Hoppe (2006) with leather wrap, ivory ferrules, 58", 12.8mm behind ferrules, 12.6mm at the tip, shafts weigh 4.0 and 4.4, butt weighs 15.6, super nice condition and colors.

I’m still looking for a Schon H4. I have 2 but had them wrapped. I want a wrapless H4. I did have a sneaky made by Sly. It was a lousy experience. To those that like his work... cheers. He ignored some details and the finish is not 100%. 5 weeks became 4-5 months. And he’s not a good bullshiiter.

Why not just have whoever does your refinish work, finish over your Schon to make it wrapless? Black linen can look like ebony.

Schon is popular, they make a nice cue. And the H4 is nice, but it has rounded CNC points.

To me, any proper wrapless Hoppe tribute is not only sharp points, but actually a real full splice.

Sounds to me like you are looking at ebony, and it sounds more like not just a cue with a Hoppe ring more like you want that Ebony Brunswick Hoppe Pro look.

Finding a nice real ebony Hoppe to convert would eat up most if not all of your budget, so that's probably out.

Several good makers have been mentioned. You mentioned a bad experience with one of them. Move on, try another.

The full splice limits the number of makers unless your maker agrees to use a blank you supply or that he sources from another maker.

I don't have a maker to suggest...just thinking out loud.

I have to ask...do you really want a wrapless Hoppe tribute with an A joint? To me, that looks like tits on a bull. Or...a Schon with a black wrap.

.

Or look for a nice Willie Hoppe professional and the heck with tributes.
Ask your favorite cuemaker go over it and make a nice shaft or two.

I had 2 H4’s wrapped with leather. No regrets I enjoy the beauty and playing with them. But I miss having the wrapless one. I need it like a snail needs airbrakes and I took an oath to stop buying cues. But I would like to replace it if possible.

Yeah...so did I...really....seriously...if my wife asks....

The last time a tube arrived at my front door I told my wife it was a telescope....

.

The main thing we must stress to our wives is do not sell for what we said we paid for them. She did threaten to take the cues and leave. I would miss them.

If my wife said "me or the cues" I would miss her.

Understood. Thank you. This gentleman had the same thought on his Pechauer. This was leather. Now it's covered black irish linen. Having options is good.

That's beautiful.

I have a thing for simple dash rings, maple or white. I bought my Dayton because it had them, and nice veneers...and of course because it is a Dayton.

I hope people feel the same way when Paul gets done with my three Herman
Rambow cues, when one comes out fully restored, and the other two are wrapless full splice players.
I've had them for a long time just laying around, and I wanted to play with them, instead of the wall hanger thing.

They were straight and fat, so wrapless seemed like a cool project.
Very early Titlists, why not use them as players.
My intent is to get them into modern playability, and I don't think it's been done before

Amen!
Special tools needed and Mr. Drexler has them.
Patience, love, respect and the ability to define and appreciate what the original maker did, should accomplish what your looking for.

I've heard some rumblings, the history thing and all.
We are reusing the original Cortland on the one being restored, but the wraps had
already been changed on the two going wrapless.
My next dilemma is what to do with the four Willie Mosconi Rambow shafts I
purchased, phase 2 of this project.
Leave them alone for the historical value, or play with them because they look like
great shafts, straight after almost 80 years.
They will need new collars and possibly ferrules to really play with, but they could
work, I'm just not comfortable with them as is.
The provenance may not mean much if I fix them.
We decided to wait until everything is done.
Back to the wall hanger thing again

What are the joint screws? I know which ones you already have.
