I tried one of those Russian cues
made of Hornbeal ,if I remember

A fella on az said the wood is heavy and stiffish

I want to experiment with different shafts for my schon cue

Does anyone have some of that wood
if so please contact me

I might like you to make me one
with a nice firm heavy not wimpy

12.5 mm but not pro taper

i don't claim to know anything except what i like when i try it

Interesting project, Dean. Hope you let us know how it works out.

I've got a small pile of hop-hornbeam, which has a higher Janka rating than straight hornbeam; but it never would have occurred to me to make a cue shaft out of it. Probably the most un-stable wood in my shop. I use it for chisel handles and other stuff that takes abuse. Acquired years ago when helping another woodworker store machines and clean shop when he moved to Europe for his wife's job.

Considering the characteristics you mention (which most people would find objectionable today when LD shafts are the popular benchmark); have you ever had made or shot with an ebony spliced shaft (not butt) like BBC used to put on their highest value cues including the 360?

You might as well find lake salvaged maple or even sycamore .
I have one piece of lake salvaged old growth sycamore and it's denser than maple .

I have Hornbeam shafts in different stages.
Plays fine, really nice if you want a stiff shaft, or something like a break or jump shaft.

Why not order a shaft from him ? If it's the same folks I just dealt with (Eugene & Willie Blade) they are great to work with. They make a fine product at a reasonable price. They are from the Ukraine (not Russia) so perhaps it is another outfit you are referring to.

I bought one from willie blade to try
now i can try out a stiff heavy shaft like i like

i hope i really like this one

Makes me wonder how stiff Deano wants his playing shaft to be.
He already likes them cone shaped. Does not like the "pro-taper".
Then, he's also trying hollowed carbon fiber.
Might as well try titanium shafts. haha!

There are a few in use in the league where I play (in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada) and their owners love them. I hope it works out for you.
