Hostility towards the ABP about the boycott

Pro ABP

Without knowing all of the facts, I am sure, I side the the ABP. I do not think their demands are unwarranted. Barry was still denying all of the players were not paid from last year on time. How did he not know that? You can't pee on someones' leg and say it is raining. Come on. The situation has grown over the years, and I feel the players needed to request positive changes.

This is a really difficult situation and nobdoy I suspect outside of Barry and the ABP know all the facts. With that being the case many people on here are being more than a little tough, particularly on the ABP.

What we do know is that there are issues with the US Open that need resolving. The only way that can happen is if the two parties get together and have a meaningful dialog on how to move forward.

From the bits I do know it would appear that the ABP have laid out their issues clearly and stated they will not play unless these are addressed. In return Barry provided statements on his side of the argument. However Barry again provided a press release that included statements that were incorrect, look at the statement from Luke Riches of Matchroom Sports for the details.

Perhaps better communication and fact checking is required before any further statements are made, not just from th parties involved but from people here too. It does get me somewhat annoyed that many posters think they 'know it all', yet have never experienced life as a promoter or as a player. All I can say is that a lot of players have it tough, they live from hand to mouth and day to day. They simply don't have the reserves to wait weeks or months to get paid. I really have no idea from the promoters side with something of this scale.

Tournaments that state they will pay a certain way at a certain time IMO are obligated to do just that. There will always be times when circumstances dictate that is not possible for a number of reasons and people know that. When that happens the obligation at that point falls on the Promoter to communicate that fact to the parties involved as soon as it is known and have a plan worked out for resolving that issue. That part is not Rocket Science it's common sense.

I truly hope a solution can found that all parties invloved are agreeable too and that the US Open can go forward with everyone taking part. If those players on the list do not appear at this years Open it will IMO devalue the Tournament (possibly terminally) greatly.

I dont think anyone is knocking what the APB is trying to accomplish, just the manner in which they did it. As I have stated before great intent BAD execution.

I have haven't walked that mile in their shoes that people talk about but i understand they are trying to improve their quality of life and make a decent living at something they truely love.

It is definitely not raining!

But to play devil's advocate: why has the US Open been the sole boycott threatened? It certainly is not the only event to have payment issues.

There's ZERO money in pool.

Forcing promoters to post-up will only result in much, much, much smaller tournament purses.

I'd rather get paid a ton more and have it late than to get paid peanuts on-time.

I don't know if this is the ABP's reasoning or if any others have been contacted or not. If I were trying to accomplish something similar to the ABP in whatever line of business it was, I would target the institution that among others things:

1. Had wide visibilty to an audience in my field
2. Had probelms that were widely known over a lenghty period of time
3. Had less than perfect communication skills
4. Were apt to make statements that were (at best) inaccurate

I am not sure what went on before the statement was released, but I don't imagine it was nothing. Without knowing the complete story I would be unwilling to criticise the ABP for the handling of this situation. However if they had done nothing previously, which I find hard to imagine, I would agree that it could and probably should have been handled differently.

Post specific information about events to have payment issues. It may be relevant.

What was the issue over? What was the name of the event?

I am not going to do the research for you...perhaps someone may be more inclined to assist, but it is all here on the board.

But there is no guarantee about late payments at all.

So, you are willing to wait 2-3 years to get paid, if at all? Read the USPPA thread. There is a tread starting to develop. Unless somthing is done, its just gonna keep going.

Sure the purses will be smaller, but at least the money will be there and not the "check is in the mail".

The long term growth of pro pool is gonna be slow, long and painful.

But who is gonna bring in the big name sponsors? Who is gonna do the postive marketing pool needs. Who has the vision to grow the sport of pool. This is the hole that needs filling.

I can think of several brand names that would be good for pool tourneys....Dr Scholls, any brand name footwear, pants, shirts. Pain meds, Flo Max and on and on.

How about a AARP event. Seniors are a untapped market.

Marketing is gonna be the key to the future of pro pool.

There has to be a certain amount of added money for the tourney to be a points event for the WPA points, $50,000 actually. The same players that want to be paid immediately ALSO want the US Open to be a points event.

Barry is adding more money to the BENEFIT of the players than sponsorship, vendors, tv rights, and the gate covers. The shortfall is made up from the til at Q-Masters, That means that in the end Barry is not only the promoter but likely the BIGGEST sponsor of the tournament. Many of you act like this is ABP vs a promoter only. If Barry is ALSO the biggest sponsor for the US Open what exactly are the ABP pros thinking when they go about s**ting where they eat......

...As for Archer and company not playing ..., let's just wait and see on that. It seems like these rumblings are more saber rattling/chest beating to perhaps influence events than they are actual threats.

JA gave himself an out with the statement he made and I think he will have sorely mis-judged what the reaction of the fans would be.

...US fans would consider it treason for JA and his posse to not play.

... Secondly, we're not talking about stupid rich athletes here. The money ...will likely over-ride a boycott.
Anybody remember the above? It predated the ABP/ US Open discussions here.

I'm jus sayin.
