I am not talking about the pros or serious tournaments and action. I mean the amateur leagues like APA, BCA, VNEA, local in house etc…

Is the casual amatuer league player on the rise or on the decline? How are the various pool leagues doing in your area?

Alive, well and kicking here in NYC. APA, BCA and the new league, NAPL are all well represented.

As far as the player level on the rise or decline ? Could not tell you. I am too new. One year in BCA 8 ball.

Thanks. It seems to be doing very well here in the Dallas Fort Worth area. I am of the opinion that pool is not so much dying as changing its identity. It has become more of a recreational activity than a chosen profession. Its a social thing where you get to have a few drinks with your friends and play a competitive game/sport. That’s not such a bad thing for the industry as a whole. Certainly better than the alternative.

Tampa has a lot of leagues

Tampa seems to be doing well. We now have 2 APA leagues one for 8 and 9 ball. I've only met the teams in the NE side of town. The hubby and I joined a team last June on both 8 Ball and 9 Ball. But it was too much commitment for us and 3 young kids. We dropped the 8 ball team and stuck to 9 ball.

Most of us were new to leagues (or APA leagues) and were just getting settled in to the group. After the 2nd season and 2nd match in and we're in second place.. Maybe after this weeks points get totaled up we'll be in first place out of the 12 teams in our area. At any rate. Next week we play Numero 1.

I so want to win for my coach:smile:. This is serious:cool:

We had a rough start with unnecessary drama, but things are really starting to feel good. We may have a chance here. Check back with me in 11 weeks ok! :outtahere:

I heard there is a BCA league out here. I've never met anyone who said they played BCA in Tampa.

We just got started in our league. (2nd week) There are fewer players but I think that is more because of the economy and less to do with the state of pool in our area.

But all in all it's pretty good here in north eastern Missouri.

Poorly, in central Louisiana. Places keep closing and the number of teams keeps dwindling.

Here in central Maine, things seem to be stable, perhaps a little growth. In our town, we've had APA 8-ball for many years, and we always have between 11 and 14 teams, depending on the session. We're currently into our second year of APA 9-ball, after several years without it. Not as much participation, just 6 teams, but holding steady.

USAPL has just started here, as well, and hopefully there will be enough participation for that format to survive and grow.

Two other towns nearby have good APA leagues, both 8 and 9. Actually, they do better with 9 than with 8, and far better than our 9-ball division, despite us being a much larger population than those towns. So league is good there, as well. Both of those towns take turns hosting the tri cups and best of the best tournaments, too.

There are a few leagues here in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Most are showing some form of growth. We just launched a new Elite league at the Doolys here. Last year we had an 8 ball (on 9 footers) league for a huge range of players of all levels. We drew in 40+ players. This year we created an Elite league for the upper tier players here and changed the format to be 8 and 9 ball in two separate matches. We still have the Rec league running as well. This season there are 34 players in the elite and 36 players in the Rec. Pretty happy with the turn out. We also got the two best players in the city to join which has added a lot of top end power on the list. Going to be a great season!

The leagues here in the Denver Area seem to be doing well. The APA is about as expected, mostly rec players and the numbers don't really seem to be declining. The BCA has at least a few leagues running and I understand that there are some TAP leagues running as well. There are also several local independent leagues operating and the open tournament scene is running well as well. I think in the leagues you are likely to see lots of "cross over" so the actual numbers may be a bit deceiving. The face of the pool scene seems to be changing some with the ownership of some of the leagues changing hands, but that be a positive thing. Maybe some new blood is needed to provide a new enthusiasm and a lacking local interest will be rekindled

Pretty good. I play in the SFOGL. Communities put teams together and we play each other. 3 divisions. There is a board. We have a luncheon and trophy awards at the end of the season. The player levels vary. It's fun. It's competitive. It's active.
SFOGL.......South Florida Old Geezer League. Seriously it is the S. Florida Senior League in Palm Beach County. We play from Oct to March

Our VNEA leaque has outgrown one night, too many teams now and not enough tables, so the Advanced league (8 teams) now plays on Thursday while the Novice (8 teams) and Intermediate (16 teams, was 12 last year) are still on Wednesdays. The inhouse leagues seem to be full as well.

Dave, in Saskatoon Canada, a city of about 225,000

day 1. Southington Ct. Shooters billiards over 55 yrs. old eight ball. 58 players.
nothing wrong with that

North County San Diego. There are tons of APA teams and divisions. One or two BCA divisions that I know of and a TAP league as well. Not bad I'd say

Here in Meridian MS there are 2 APA 8-ball divisions with 10-16 teams each. Not much interest in 9-ball it seems... I think the BCA website said there was a league in Laurel but I'm not sure. This is the first year in the APA for me but there has been slight growth over the last 2 sessions.

Small town Nebraska of 8000 and on the rise. Surprising how much play goes on around here. No action that I know of but lots of league play.

Two of three sports bars have closed in the Silver Spring Maryland area. There are a lot of hungry league players without a place to play.

Pool in Central Pa is doing well.
The number of teams are down somewhat from past years but there is something for everyone. We are strong with VNEA, & TAP, with various apa and BCA leagues scattered around. Many tavern pool leagues as well which keeps costs down for players and clubs.
We have a website dedicated to Pa Pool. Take a look and see what is happening in Pa pool

We're good in south Houston. If I wanted to play in a league, it would be easy to find one. If I wanted to get into action, I could get played at places all over Houston.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like the pool leagues are doing well. The industry seems to offer more for the amateur than the professional. I know I am stating the obvious, but sometimes it can get depressing around here reading about how pool is dying. I think pool is still relevant and very much alive (actually thriving in Asia). Sometimes I just want to hear some encouraging comments!

23 teams in our BCA league here in Victoria. Up from 9 five years ago. Our Wednesday league is doing well too. :-)
