how are ya'll doing in league ?

Couple of things I'm really tired of playing league matches -
I can shoot a shot 100 time when I'm practicing or fooling around and make it 100 time out of 100, but miss it in the real match. Focused, stayed down, I think I'm losing it in my bridge or trying to hit center ball but being off center just enough to to impart a little throw on the object ball. It drives me nucking futs! another thing is starting out playing well, you build that lead, but can't close and the end is always a dog fight. and again practicing it nothing for me to string together 3 or 4 break and runs, breaking up clusters playing great shape, but I'll be damned if I can do that in a match.
Anyone else have issues like that?

When you say they weren't planning on playing you, do you mean they knew all along or after they threw their 4th match or? If they had a lineup in mind all along sure, but most teams see who throws and how the matches go win/loss wise to determine who they want to throw throughout the night which might include making a decision on the 4th/5th matches late.

Breathe 2-pack Dave, breathe!! :D

They already had the lineup of players decided when I got there.

The lineup was:
New SL4 (to get matches in)
SL6 (Captain)
SL4 (to get matches in)
SL2
SL5 (we had three SL5's show up)

They were going to decide which SL5 to play last, I just left instead.

We had all eight players show up (6,5,5,5,4,4,3,2)

Just as an outside perspective, since I didn't play and remained calm as a spectator, the team we played was way under-handicapped.
Their SL5 played our SL3, who just barely made enough to keep it close; we lost 12-8.
Our SL6 played their SL5, who ran out three racks, two were BnR's; we lost 13-7.
Our SL4 played their SL4, who I beat by 3 balls the last time we played, he ran out one rack and played jam up safes.
Then our SL2 played their SL2 and half way through I left.

I've played their SL5, that played our SL6, outside of the APA league. We played a long set on a tight Diamond 9 footer and it went back and forth for a while. He most definitely should not be a SL5. Then again, I'm an SL5 too...

Showed up to our 9-ball match at 6:30pm (1 hour early to practice).
It was 10:30pm before our fourth match started and they weren't planning on playing me.
Why do people do that? I was there for four hours and you can't tell me that I don't need to play? WTF

been in that situation my self dave. it used to not bother me ...well not too much. heck i used to show up ..get some practice in...hang out ans shoot the bull with every body and i knew before i left the house i was not playing that night.

now a days it irks me off to sit there for 4 hours and be told ..".you aint playing tonight." since i got older and have a job that is more physical than i used to have. if i am not gonna play i would rather sit at home watching tv and resting up for work the next day.

i have called my captain a few times and told him ..if i aint playing tonight i aint showing up.

i feel bad doing that some times because i always considered my self a team player but i feel kinda burnt out some times playing on 4 teams a week.

To me, this is the biggest problem with APA league, it just goes too late. I play pretty much every week, but when I'm done shooting, I get out of there. I used to feel obligated to stay until the end, but when you have to wake up super early the following morning, you need to be a little selfish and get some sleep.

I can only play league twice a week due to other obligations. I go to play pool and I will not sit around for sometimes up to 5 hours and be told that I am not shooting that night. I will wait for 2 matches to finish to get a feel for the rest of the match ups. I will then ask my Captain if I will play. If he says probably not I will take my own table and find a game which is easy to do. I will get to play for at least a few hours.

That's the biggest downfall for me.

I'm up at 5 a.m. to be out of the house for 5:30 a.m. and make the hour commute to work for a normal 9 hour day (sometimes up to 12 hour day). Factor in that we get an hour for lunch and you can see that I'm gone for just about the entire day. If I get off work at 5:30 p.m. (10 hour day), then it takes me an hour or more to get across the lake. Driving the causeway, across Lake Pontchartrain, everyday gets tiresome. So I rush over to show up to the match around 6:30-7:00 p.m. only to be told that I'm not playing hours later. There's no hard feelings, we weren't expecting everyone to show up, it was a miscommunication between players.

I went last night to my college buddy's APA 8-ball match. I played against the opposing team's SL6 on the practice table. I was playing pretty sporty and got my two pack in, then I broke dry... Matt Spina probably has a voodoo doll of me! :p

I try and have a lineup in my head for each week, well before we start. I rarely deviate from that, unless someone can't make it suddenly for some reason, or the other team has none of their top skill level players there that week for whatever reason (I will still play stronger players, but not necessarily all of them, depending on a number of factors).

I will tell my players whether I expect them to play or not very early in the evening, sometimes before we start. I do ask them to stay through the first couple matches if they can, so they other teams can't easily figure out who we are going to be playing. If they have a good reason to bolt, then of course they need to leave...

It isn't as difficult here as it seems to be for you folks. We rarely end later than 11PM, usually between 10:30 and 11. The places we play have plenty of tables, so every match goes to a second table by 9PM, and having the tables available means that everyone can practice as much as they like, so no one is just sitting around unless they want to.

I kind of like and appreciate having the bulk of my team hanging in till near the end, just from a teamwork aspect. We did really well last session, and I attribute much of it to our team atmosphere. We all like each other, and we all have a great time together. I believe that makes a difference. That having been said, I feel for those who have to be up really early, and finish really late. I'm up at 6:30 every day, so I get it...

played in my 8 ball ltc today.

1st round we won the toss. my co captain wanted them to throw 1st. me bing the captain i over ruled him and elected to throw 1st. :grin-square:

we discussed it and agreed to throw me 1st. i faced a 6 in a 5-4 race. i come out the gate red hot winning the 1st 2 racks with no problem ...potting balls pretty good and playing a few lock down safes. 3rd rack i got 3 balls left and make the cardinal sin..... thinking about my next ball while i am shooting this one. rattled the pocket and my opponent ran out. it got me out of my rythym a lil bit and he won the next rack also. i got focused again winning the next 2 racks ..winning the match 4-2.

they throw a 4 and we counter with a 4. our 4 losses 3-2. we throw our shitty 5 and they throw a 5. both played bad....real bad but our 5 won 4-3.

they throw another 5 and i throw my 6. the lo comes up and says start the last game cause of running late. my match took 2 hours.:grin-square: we throw a 3 and they throw a 4.

so i am totaling up handicaps while filling out the score sheet. i total up 24 for them. ??? i figure it up again. come up with 24 again. i wait till the rack is broke and then call forfiet on them. they said yea they knew it was 24. what the heck ?? they knew it and coulda threw their 2 against our 3 ?

2nd round . i win the flip again. my co captain wants them to throw...i say ok. they throw a 4. i counter with my 4. he wins 3-0. i throw my other 5....the shitty one.
they throw a 6. my 5 loses 5-3. yea he lost giving his opponent 2 games. an early 8 and a scratch on the 8. they throw a 3 and we counter with a 3. our 3 loses 2-0.

we throw our 6. they counter with their 7. their 7 wins 5-0. dont even go the 5th match where i was planning on throwing myself.:(

we gonna try again in the morning.

played my 2nd day of ltc today.

win the toss and i elect to throw me. they counter with a 6. i remembered him from last years ltc's. he played a chit load of safes and won 5-1 iirc. was not happening this time.

when it was over i had won 4-3 in 37 innings with me playing 15 and him playing 18 safes.

they threw a 4 and we countered with a 4. our guy won 3-0. we throw our shitty 5 and they counter with a 5. my guy won . it was ugly but i used all his time outs.winning 4-2. game over 7-0 in 3 matches.

next round we win toss again and throw me 1st. they counter with a 4. i am thinking all right i got an easy game . WRONG !!. this sucker was running out from every where. he got up 2-0 on me real quick like.

i said this aint happening to me. i buckled down winning the next 4 in a row. 27 innings with a chit load of safes.

our 4 was raised to a 5 and we threw him . they counter with a 5. another one of their players that was running out from every where:eek:. he won 4-0 real quick like. 6 innings quick.

i aint saying much bout the next match....never know when my g/f might read my posts. she lost on the hill to their 6. she is a 3. they throw a 3 next match and we counter with a 3. our 3 gets shut out 2-0. game over...no 5th match played.

i got pretty amused about the following situation concerning my win over that 6 this morning.

i go to the counter and a guy i know is standing there. he says i heard you beat so and so. i say yea. he throws up his hand and says high 5.

a girl standing there nudges the guy she is with and says did you here that ? ,,, he beat so and so earlier. the guy reaches over and say give me a high 5.

i go to check on how a friends team is doing and i hear... i heard you beat so and so. i said yea ...he says gimme 5.

i ask what is up with every one wanting to high 5 me ? he says so and so is a cocky mfer and the biggest sand bagger in the league. no one likes him and is glad you beat him and knocked his team out of the ltc.

my 2nd year of reaching ltc and just like last year... i am the only one who went undefeated on my team. not trying to sound cocky. :grin-square:

Well, this was my first session of APA 9-ball, and we held our LTC on Saturday. Left the house at 8:30am on Saturday morning (tournament started at 10am), didn't get home until almost 3:30am Sunday morning.. But, we ended up winning it, and advancing to Nationals in Vegas
My team played really really well, and we only lost 2 matches on the entire day (5 rounds). Because we played so well, I only had to shoot 2 matches myself on the day (I was being saved for last) , which pretty much sucked sitting there all day, but ended up being Ok since we won at at the end (there were open practice tables after the first few rounds were over though to shoot on)..

I really hate these long and grueling days, but I get to go back out to Vegas again for the effort.. Hopefully our sl2 can make it through, otherwise I won't fit and won't be able to play...

How many of you would love to have a 4 on your team that for the last 3 session they are avg. winning % is 80%.

as i stated in my ltc post. i have a 4 that was just raised to a 5 during the ltc. he has a lifetime win % of 46%.

so i throw him against another 5. he loses 4-0 in 6 innings.
i betcha he is still a 5 next week also.

here is another one for you.

my g/f's 18 year old boy joins the team.he has not played 30 racks of pool in his life. i understand starting men as a 4. also understand that it takes a while to establish your true skill level. this boy wins his 1st match against a young girl who is a 3. he wins 3-0 in 12 innings and is raised to a 5 ? wtf ???

News flash...date to be determined that guys can be APA 2s again in 8 ball. I wasn't at league last night but got the text from the wife mentioning this. Sandbagging door just got opened just a bit wider IF this is true. So much for my 80+% win rate if they start throwing them on me.

Already happening in our area.

We have two males that ARE 2's to the fullest extent and them not being able to play as 2's messed everything up for us.

We have no 3's, so they were our 3's.

Well in a normal night we could play my captain, 7, me, 7, a 2, a 5, and a 2.

Well in our City Cup we couldn't do that. We had to play at least one of them and as a 3 they had no chance. We didn't know about the 2-3 thing until we qualified and everything.

It literally ruined our strategy 100%

We had several female ONES playing in the field.

How the HELL does that work fairly???

Has to be a local bylaw. Had this discussion with our league office a couple weeks ago.

No male 2's in 8-ball. Yes, in 9-ball (no male 1's).

Our opponent had a male who was listed as a 2. I called, it was a mistake.
