How funny would it be to see a room full of well known road players
in one of the cable ads promoting parental control.
The mother walks in on the guys around a pool table, obviously hustling someone
First praises them for their business sense and then lectures them about the influence their gambling has on her kids.
now that's pool!
Since everyone always compares pool to poker,
poker did nothing to gain commercial acceptance.
Most of those guys have no business on TV, but
since the hole card cam,
people love to watch them play, pretending they
know what they'd do in each situation.
JCIN and bignasty are on the right track,
somebody give those two guys a boat load of
money and a camera crew.
Just the woofing is enough to capture an audience,
show the highlights and a preview of next week's match up.
Kids will think they can walk into a pool hall and talk up a game.
Put it on MTV and watch the pool rooms fill up.
Poker was not fighting a battle anywhere near as much as pool.
Poker is gambling and it has been around for years and years and there
are places all over the world that you can do it legally.
It was already accepted. TV and the internet poker rooms brought the boom to poker as well as one other major factor. more and more casinos or poker rooms are sprouting up across the nation. We, in pool, are not fighting Poker but rather a national phenomenon.
While I enjoy the gambling aspect of pool and really love to see the action I don't think thats what will bring pool to the masses. Its already the largest participantion sport in the world but we can barely get a small
venue filled.
Promotors keep trying variations of the same games. I think perhaps it will take something out of the box.
Twoof the most enjoyable times I have had watching pool especially recently.
1- Here in SoCal that had some events with preset layouts and you
played 5-10 tables and kept your stroke score. I really really enjoyed watching the top players figure their patterns and try for the run outs. Strategy came into effect if they were out of line or missed.
Very fun to watch and at times there was some heat/drama as players needed to finish a table or two very well to advance.
2- A gambling match between two players playing the 12 ball ghost.
The bet was 200 and each player had a chance to break and run with BIH.
The other player could tie him if he went second that round. Very entertaining and is a format that could work in Pro events.
Race to ten runouts without BIH. or race to 5 and best 3of5 for quicker
action and more drama.
Many people say that we dont need to change the format of pool and that the media should accept the sport like it is. Others have tried this and it just doesnt work.
As poker starts declining there will still be gambling and casinos sweeping the nation. I think an event tour tied in with these locations is the way to go. Or at least worth looking into.
