How can we have people accept pool for what it is?

I see lots AZ posters who appear to be desperate to change the face of billiards, and put it into the mainstream.

They show up with a ton of ideas with no clue how to implement them.

You may have even read a few threads from these people.

Just a short post to advise you to be vigilant while trying to navigate the AZ that you may encounter a few of these posts.

Thanks!

So you want people to accept pool for what it is ????

Its by far the most disfunctional, disorganized, and underappreciated sport that there is.
Yeah we need people to accept it for that.

I have heard some decent ideas from more people not in the industry than I ever have from people in the industry.

Even as a pool enthusiast I find watching it pretty damn boring sometimes.

Golf is boring as well but there are multiple players out there all getting coverage and most of the time someone does something very well from a tough position.
I watching a putting contest on ESPN once and was literally glued to the
screen. Not one name player in the event either.

love it

How funny would it be to see a room full of well known road players
in one of the cable ads promoting parental control.

The mother walks in on the guys around a pool table, obviously hustling someone
First praises them for their business sense and then lectures them about the influence their gambling has on her kids.

now that's pool!

Since everyone always compares pool to poker,
poker did nothing to gain commercial acceptance.
Most of those guys have no business on TV, but
since the hole card cam,
people love to watch them play, pretending they
know what they'd do in each situation.

JCIN and bignasty are on the right track,
somebody give those two guys a boat load of
money and a camera crew.

Just the woofing is enough to capture an audience,
show the highlights and a preview of next week's match up.
Kids will think they can walk into a pool hall and talk up a game.

Put it on MTV and watch the pool rooms fill up.

that's spot on, and it's the bottom line. whilst this is the case you will always get people putting forward suggestions and ideas. besides this a pool discussion forum!

Hey there Gregg,

DARTS, poker, bowling, and curling (of all "sports") are getting much more publicity than pocket billiards. It's no wonder why snooker over in the UK is so widely popular: civilized manner, well behaved manners, a stern authoritative referee with experience (refs are like rock stars over there), and a full thrust arena where people can court the players. Similar but not as popular in the carom area.

And look what we have here in the US:
Whilst we're being dominated by our three major sports: NBA, NFL, and MLB. Other sports are in try for better succession in their departments (which soccer is one of them with the arival of Becks).

There's a good reason to thank the Korean Dragon for progressing his promotion because at least he wants to try to accomplish something that Trudeau can't do jack squat of !!

Yeah, and why don't ugly people get as many dates as good loking people. How do we make the world accept ugly people.

Oh I know, Tax them, if there are enough people complaining that will draw attention to the problem.:D

Poker was not fighting a battle anywhere near as much as pool.
Poker is gambling and it has been around for years and years and there
are places all over the world that you can do it legally.
It was already accepted. TV and the internet poker rooms brought the boom to poker as well as one other major factor. more and more casinos or poker rooms are sprouting up across the nation. We, in pool, are not fighting Poker but rather a national phenomenon.

While I enjoy the gambling aspect of pool and really love to see the action I don't think thats what will bring pool to the masses. Its already the largest participantion sport in the world but we can barely get a small
venue filled.

Promotors keep trying variations of the same games. I think perhaps it will take something out of the box.
Twoof the most enjoyable times I have had watching pool especially recently.
1- Here in SoCal that had some events with preset layouts and you
played 5-10 tables and kept your stroke score. I really really enjoyed watching the top players figure their patterns and try for the run outs. Strategy came into effect if they were out of line or missed.
Very fun to watch and at times there was some heat/drama as players needed to finish a table or two very well to advance.

2- A gambling match between two players playing the 12 ball ghost.
The bet was 200 and each player had a chance to break and run with BIH.
The other player could tie him if he went second that round. Very entertaining and is a format that could work in Pro events.
Race to ten runouts without BIH. or race to 5 and best 3of5 for quicker
action and more drama.

Many people say that we dont need to change the format of pool and that the media should accept the sport like it is. Others have tried this and it just doesnt work.

As poker starts declining there will still be gambling and casinos sweeping the nation. I think an event tour tied in with these locations is the way to go. Or at least worth looking into.

I guess you have good intentions here, but these types of threads tend to prompt interesting analysis and discussion.

Whether the face of billiards needs a change is, of course, a matter of opinion, but the how and why that underly the question are certainly fair game in these AZB parts.

I think you are probably in a small minority if you find such threads inappropriate or annoying. Still, I respect your opinion and your right to voice it.

the difference between poker and pool is that a novice in poker, armed with nothing more than the games basic understanding, can and will beat a pro from time to time. That can NEVER HAPPEN IN POOL.

Thus the attraction to poker. People can practice, live, for free, on their home computer. Then go beat a helmuth or brunson in a tournament. I'd like to see johnny mcbanger beat Thorsten Hohmann, NOT!

I agree! It's not the image of pool because the average person has no idea what most pro's do in their day to day life. The IPT produced a better televsion program. I would like to see someone produce a more interesting program. I think two commentators and every single shot of the match with a commercial after every game is boring.

OH NO! I'm one of THOSE POSTERS!!!!!!:)
