How Could This Happen? - Alternate Version

Here are 2 shots from my recent straight pool match with "eales" during his most recent visit to Betmore's Basement.

In this first shot, as usual, I had a superior plan to use the 4 for my key ball; but through a horrendous bit of luck (or perhaps a horrendous bit of execution), I ended up going WAY past the 4 ball, with no resulting shot on the 4 or the 1 (I could not cut the 4 in the side).

I decided to bank the 4, stunning the cue ball forward for natural position on the 1. I ended up with perfect position on the 1 ball to continue my run (no big surprise), but the 4 ball actually went in as called (I think even eales figured out that was a BIG SURPRISE - low percentage shot, but pretty cool if I do say so).

In this second shot, I was playing for position on the 11 ball for a below the rack break shot. Through a tremendously bad roll (damn cue ball went right where I hit it), I ended up on the wrong side of the perfectly positioned 11.

Since I had seen this shot before, and since I didn't want eales to think I was a total wuss, I called the cross-corner bank on the 11, hit the bank at warp speed, and totally shattered the pack, extending my run another rack. Did I mention the 11 went down?? What a fluke.

You have OBVIOUSLY not seen breakup play (and I use the term "play" loosely, his totally chaotic, and random twitches, grimaces, and tremors really don't fall into the usual definition of play - most observers would vote on seizure or Tourette's as the most likely explanation for one of his innings at the table).

It would probably be even money if he got 101 balls in a race to 100 (he would probably scratch a couple of times before he figured out the generosity of the spot - those were 3 damn long years in 3rd grade for the break-man). In any case, our grudge match (the "Thrilla in the Ville") will be even up, race to 150 for 1000 jellybeans (assuming he doesn't fire another air barrel).

Well, don't take this personally; but I'd say that going to DCC to watch breakup play is a great deal like going to the Miss America pageant and spending all your time chatting up the homely girl selling tickets in the lobby.

Well, then on principle I retract my statement to Steev (the principle is of course, NEVER AGREE WITH BREAKUP ON ANYTHING - if he say's something is black, you can be damn certain it's white as snow).

Steev, come on down to DCC and watch a great match (breakup probably won't shoot much anyway).

Nahhhhhhh, I think sjm would have done things somewhat differently. He keeps mentioning these really obscure plays called "safeties" (or something like that, I wasn't really paying very close attention) - I don't really think they could be very important, DCP never mentions them.

I'm not quitting, and that's that.

I like your shot a LOT (looks like one of breakup's typical ideas); but I'm unclear on whether you use backhand or forehand English on this shot (perhaps both simultaneously would work?....or would the pivot point be 12 feet???).

P.S. - Do you aim at the upper or lower half of the reflection of the light on the ball? Does it help to wear night vision goggles to better identify the edge of the ball??

Of course Willie, that would be the only way to play that shot to get on that rail cluster from hell. Don’t even try it without a predator shaft though.

i practice safeties.
hmmmm?
perhaps i'll start to post results of my spreads using the WEI diagrams, and get everybody's opinion on what safety would be best. there'll be alot of diagrams, because 98% of the time i dont have a chance to run out.

Well, you could post those, but DANG that would be dull. I prefer the Butch and Sundance option - COME OUT OF THE FREAKING BANK SHOOTING. If a player can't shoot his way out of a jam, he must be a girly-man. Hell, you don't see the great players like Efren playing safe do you?.....what?.....you do?.....well, please ignore this post.

P.S. - I thought "safeties" practice involved getting something out of one of those machines in the rest room at the gas station.
