How did you get your first custom?

I got introduced to the whole custom cue thing back in the mid 90's when I played at Hawaiian Brian's everyone played w/ Schons, Southwests or Tads. Being around those cues drove me to acquire my 1st custom cue- a 86 Southwest. Been collecting ever since.

Won my first custom cue in a 9-ball match back in the mid 80's. The guy was shooting air, asked me to hold onto the cue for a few days until he could raise the money and I never heard from him again. Lost it in another match a few months later. Can't even remember what kind of cue it was, but it was not a production cue. Second one, I bought used... a Richard Black... then it was like an addiction from then on!

Later,
Bob

I started playing when I was 12. When I was 16, I went into the local billiard supply and spotted a custom Palmer for $185. That was a lot of money in 1966, so I went and got a job at a local grocery store. Six weeks later, I cashed my paychecks and went and bought it. Next day, I quit that job and continued on my quest for a misspent youth.
In 1983, I was in a bar in Houston and started playing this guy for $5 a game on a bar box. He has this beautiful Joss West cue which he said his father gave him. He wouldn't jack the bet and I ended up beating him out of $115.
He got very upset, threw the cue on the floor and said he would never play pool again. I asked if he was serious and he said, **** yeah!
I said I would like to buy his cue and he said, "How much?" I said I would give him his money back. Well, he handed me the cue and its Fellini case, took the money and hit the door. Best hitting cue I ever had, bar none!
It was stolen in 1992 out of my car and I'm sure whoever stole it didn't know what they had.

If someone went to the trouble to steal a cue out of a car, I think there's a good chance they had some idea it was worth something...

Of course, if they just took everything (radio, CDs, etc.) then maybe not.

I suppose I'm the only one who hasn't owned a custom cue, at least that was made for me. I've won Ginas to walmart specials. Well not true I'd throw a WM special in the trash but you get the idea. At any rate I can't call any cue a custom no matter who made the thing. It may or may not have been custom made for the original owner, but not to me. Hell he may have won it from someone else as well.

I then decided I wanted to get a custom cue so I did some research and found out about this guy named Skip Weston who does razor sharp, ultra-even, points, which is one of the things that I value, so I placed my order for an ebony and burl 6-point Southwest style cue. By this time I was bitten by the cue bug two or three times and I've been out of my mind since!

Hey folks. I'm going to have to call B.S. on this post:) . It is a well known fact that in his last public appearance in Peoria, zeeder was observed (by MANY AZB witnesses) to be playing with a super-ugly, all black break cue (well... I thought it was a beautiful break cue, but there were damn few "razor sharp" points on that frickin' slab of wood). Anyway, I'll believe it when I see it (maybe I'll be in St. Louis in a month or two Z-man).

My very first cue was a sneaky pete made by Mike Fedunka. My second cue was an Andersen from Withita Ks. My two big faux paus were at the time I had gotten the Fedunka I went to Gus Szamboti's with my uncle and he had gotten two shafts made for his and I was offered a plain window cue and turned it down. Second was my uncle got a new Gus a year later and I turned that down ($375.00) from him. He sent it out to Pheonix and never got paid... :(

My first cue was a beat up plain viking my dad gave me to learn with. I then wanted to move up and bought a Meucci Sneaky pete which I thought was the stuff (still have it). From there, I became a fan of Johnny Archers and Nick Varners. For the longest I wanted a Joss or a Schon. Well, I found a Schon I could afford at $450 (which might as well have been $4500 at that time...I was 16 or 17). My mom knew of my passion for pool. I told her about this cue and she just said, "Go buy it." That was the most excitement I had ever felt over a gift...EVER. Well, I bought it and kept it until I was almost 19. Unfortunately I went bust and this guy traded me a Blud Sneaky and $275 for it. I do miss that Schon though, and if I can ever get another (it was some rare model) like it I will. I considered that my first CUSTOM...but I guess if we're talking about made by one person, then Rick Howard made my first "custom" cue when I lived in FL. I'm back to Schon's though for my playing cue. :) Now I just want one of those Runde era' Schons to play with.

That'd be sweet! You'll definitely have to tell me if you decide to come so I can plan a trip to play some.
