How do I rank myself?

Go buy yourself a nice custom cue...you'll instantly shoot 2-3 balls better!

That sounds like a good plan. I am hoping for a nice 2X4 case for Christmas and maybe be take lessons next year!

A nice custom cue is down the road!

A case, a lesson, and a new cue? My god, you're gonna be a pro!

Is there any testing and/or formula for ranking your skill level if your not a league player? I know I'm good, but how good? I see people posting that they are C, C+, B, etc. player but how is that determined? By some league ranking system OR more loosely based on others they have played?

Just curious...
Figure out your ghost rating. ;)

Is there anyone that would dispute the infomation in that article?

i am sure everyone disputes it a little. even i do. according to that system my game fluctuates between a low c and hi b player depending on game and the day. i only meant it to be a jumping off point for you to begin evaluating. playing the ghost as many have mentioned here is another tool that is tremendously helpful. i play alot of nine ball so i play the ghost in nine ball alot. a good thing is to get lessons from a sound, qualified instructor and they can really help tell you where your game is - although you might not like what they say. and last but not least - gamble and play open tournaments. you'll know soon enough how strong you play. lastly, i'd like to say i bought a nice instroke 3x5 cowboy and ordered a dick neighbors custom cue - and these guys are right i added two to four balls on my average run:wink:

One of the problems with rating your self is how well you can play versus how well do you usually play. We tell most people, including ourselves, how well we can play and this is self defeating.

I think that knowing how well you usually play at something like the Q-Skills is a benchmark that you can use to estimate how well you will play against an opponent. It also has some relationship to how well you will do in a tournament. Keeping track of your usual score and your tournament rankings will soon lead to a good estimate of how well you are playing at any given time.

Rating other players is a bit more difficult but once you have your own bench mark they can be rated against your game and that too is useful.

Self ratings are also useful as confidence builders. For instance when you know that your usually score 15 on the Q-Skills then you also know there is no inherent reasonthat you can't win in "X" situation.

I think that good self rating are also of use to help one answer many questions of a more personal nature, such as, "Is this a good cue stick for me?"

With a reliable usual score you can compare the new cue stick, stance, pre-shot routine, or instructional materials to your usual score. I am currently writing an article on this whole matter that contains ways to establish and use one's usual score so obviously I am an advocate of the usual scores for those who are serious about their playing ability.

Thank you again for everyones reply's. Great stuff. I've decided to use Q-Skills to get a general self ranking of my offensive game. In addition, I'm going to set up a weekly progressive ball ghost drill starting at 3.

I would like to imput something here.....

I've tried the Hopkins Q-skill system and I really don't find it too appealing. But when I tried Mike Page's Fargo System, it seem to make some decent sense from the latter skill system. Here's the link, enjoy watching and improving!

I tried it, how many points do ya get for keeping that damned board standing up ....

j/k thanks for the link looks like it can help hold interest when you are trying to practice. That's always been my problem. I hit a ball or two and I'm bored stiff. Unless someone comes over the house, our table is used for sorting laundry. I think this may help,

Pat

i would recomand trying PAT (playing ability test).
fun test. and allot of great drills.
it also shows you quick what you need to work on..

after you take the test you can check on theyr homepage how you did with the rest of the world.

only minus is..it aint free:( but its wroth it!! you can take the test with a PAT instructor. or just buy the drill-books. and take the test on your own.

there are 3 levels(3drillbooks). you should get them all.
