How do you chaulk your cue?

You too? I do the chalk on the floor between my feet thing too and I know I get good coverage because my whole tip is blue and also that white thing on the end of the shaft under the tip.

One time i seen Efren wet his finger tip and wipe the edge of the tip and then chalk but when he did this he had a tough cut in the side and the cueball was laying against the rail. Interesting.

i sometimes like to put the cue down also and chalk it looking at the tip but when i am in the zone, i look just like Earl in the youtube clip against Nick Varner when a person takes a flash of him during his shot, you can just hear him chalking i love it, but i switch hands i am a left handed player but when chalking i grap the cue with my right and chalk with my left then put the chalk down and switch to my playing hand i think i picked this up from Earl also.

I chalk from the center og the tip out to the edge and spin my cue around as the butt is touching the floor. Small little swipe applications. Then I spin the twist the cue with the chalk touching the edge of the tip to get the miscue area.

This is how I Chalk also. I use Pro Cue Care Chalkers exclusively, with a nice new piece of Blue Master Chalk.:D

I find that using the Chalkers keep's me from rushing to the next shot, I take more time to look at the table and the next shot as I am chalking up.

Work's for me.:D

I do that also. I wet the tip of my finger and then press the edge of the tip
to my fingertip as I rotate the shaft. Once the entire edge of the tip is moist I the hold the cue horizontal and rub the edge of the tip on the top of the felt on the rail of the table at a very fast rate, as I spin the cue. It leaves a nice burnished edge on the tip. I saw Mike Sigel do this back in the mid 80's and I picked up the idea from him.:)

That IS VERY interesting. I wonder if this little move could allow EXTREAM draw with less miscues?

Captain your talking about burnishing your tip but I do it on my paint leg not the rail. I don't think an owner would be to happy about this.

Back to the original quote. Has anyone ever heard of this or tried it? I wont be to the pool room for a while so I can't try it anytime real soon.

I have been playing pool for over 20 years and I have never heard of this. Whether Efren did it delibrately or not think about this. You have a long shot that requires maximum draw. EVERYONE miscues from time to time. Why not wet the edges of your tip then apply the chalk. Usually no matter how much you chalk your not going to get anymore on there but if its moist that first layer isn't going anywhere. THEN apply more chalk over the moist area untill its CAKED on the outer edge. I honestly think this would minimize your chance of a miscue. No I'm not some crazy nut. I can play A speed when I catch a gear so....am I going crazy?

this is from the U.S Open the one where Gabe Owen won it, i saw Efren do this. I thought it was weird but i have tried it i wet my finger then just rub the edge of the tip and chalk it but i use my OWN chalk LOL, and it seems to hold better, personally speaking.

I Chalk With My Butt Hand

I play in a real sh!thole, so when I apply chalk, the butt of my cue sits on the toe of my left shoe. I'll angle the cue so the table light catches the tip and swipe chalk evenly on the tip making even coverage. I tend to use the whole face of the chalk piece, eroding and even depression across the surface of the cube. As soon as the paper edge around the surface shows the slightest wear, I trade my piece for a fresh one at the pool room. Masters blue, and yes I do have a pocket chalker. Those things can be habit forming. I find myself reaching for it when I don't have it, and it throws off my rhythm when it's not in my right back pocket.

So are you a bridge hand or a butt hand chalker????

Cant believe nobody has mentioned the Stretch Chalker.
The guy that holds the butt chest level with his left hand, then stretches to reach the tip with his right.
Here I made a picture.:p

What the hell huh? I hardly ever start a new thread so I decided to do (what i think could be) a fun one.
.

I have two or three ways, depending on my mood.

Deliberate - this is where I'm looking at the tip, swiping (actually laterally tapping) the tip in a madman fashion. My goal is to beat the tip into submission. The cue is almost vertical with the butt on the floor, the shaft is in my left hand, the chalk in my right. I'm swiping away from me, while slowly rotating the cue.

Cool Hand - This is the one where I actually might look like a pool player. The cue is horizontal, with the shaft in my bridge hand (my left hand), and the butt held by my grip hand. The butt is cradled with my fingers, with my thumb on the top of the cue. My left hand swipes or brushes from top down using the wrist only, while I rotate the cue using my thumb.

Sinfully Bored - Not really recommended, but I do the same action as the Cool Hand, but the cue is vertical, with the butt cap propped against the outside of my right shoe. I normally only hold the cue with my right hand, and do the wrist thing. I'll reach over with my left hand and rotate the cue, every so often.

Sometimes, I'll rotate the cue with the same chalking hand. You have to move the cue away from vertical and back again in a back and forth motion to accomplish the rotation.

In all of the cases, if I'm using a chalk cube only, I'll put the chalk down, hold the cue nearly vertical, swipe the shaft with my right hand from joint (not quite that far down) to tip once. Then I'll grab the cue near the joint with my right hand, and swipe the shaft with my left hand similar to the first swipe, but rotating the cue to a more horizontal position. Then I'll form a looped bridge and swipe it again. Can you see it in your mind's eye? Lot's of players do this subconsciously. It's almost like poetry in motion. Unfortunately, using a chalk on a stick, it's tough to do this since part of the motion is broken up by putting the chalk in your back pocket.

I hope this helps.

This is the best thread I've read in a long time.

I was thinking of starting a thread about wiping after taking a dump. Front to back or back to front?

Eric >front to back

Like a lady putting on lipstick...........

I think I heard Minnesota Fats say that you should put chalk on a cue like a lady puts on lipstick.

While its been a long time since I have seen a lady.

or

Seen a lady actually wearing lipstick.

I think the point is carefully and not too little or too much.

IMO, he is exactly right.

Definately a bridge hand but on rare occasions I have used the butt end. I don't know what triggers this, I just know I have done so.

 I'd hate to see your underwear dude. Everyone knows you have to go both ways during a session or one of the inside edges wont get the proper attention. Next time you THINK your done wiping remember my words and give it a swipe the other way and look at the toilet paper...you'll be surprised.;)

Be carefull though. That is a sign of a real player. Anytime I see someone doing that, i always pass up playing with them.

Hey, be wary of this guy too. Just thought I would help you guys out. Don't want any of you playing a real pool shark!

LOL. Yeah these guys are fun to watch as well. If you notice they usually have the wide spread eagle sideways stance to go with it. Can we get a pic up of that?:p

Don Purdy is the most meticulous chalker of all time. We know and love him as Purdman here on AZ. His technique for chalking cues is spectacular in itself, and one piece of chalk can last a full 6 months for him. NONE goes to waste. I'm not being a jerk...I'm literally in awe of how he chalks. He gets so ANNOYED with me when we play, because I am the quintessential aggressive......chalk the cue for an hour while I'm studying the shot, get chalk all over my hand...chalker. He tried to train me....but old habits die hard. :) I'm guilty of "messy chalkers disorder".
