How do you draw the cue ball?

You must hit low on the cue ball. I suggest keeping the cue as level, parrallel to the table, as possible. You want to have the feeling like you're stroking the cue and the cue ball happens to be in the way. If you hit or poke at the cue ball you will have a difficult time executing the draw shot.

Just started playing pool. See all the guys draw their ball. How do they do that?

1. Look at the cueball instead of the object ball so you can see that you're hitting the cue ball well below center. Don't worry if you 'scoop' the ball a few times if you are hitting too low.

2. Make sure your tip is well rounded (dime or nickel) and chalk it well

3. Follow-through the stroke. If you have trouble doing that, try actually letting go of the cue like a slip stroke. (In actual fact, the follow through is not really necessary - it's only a tool to ensure you hit the ball low enough to cause backspin. Just hitting the ball low will generate draw.)

Rough draft but it could get you started.

Sorry about the picture above. Just couldn't resist. So I guess I'd better try to make up for it by adding my two cents. The above responses are good. A couple things I would add.

When your first trying it. Don't setup the cue ball anymore than about 8 to 10 inches away from your object ball. Later you can separate them more.

This does take a slightly firm stoke though I hesitate to say that because new players are usually already hitting the cue ball to hard all the time. Note I said firm stroke not hard stroke.

So I can draw my ball with a center ball hit?

That's where I start?

You have to hit below center, the farther down, the more draw you will get. The limit, the furthest you can go without miscuing, is about 2/5 of the way from the center to the bottom of the cueball. This is the limit of the actual point of contact . Because the tip is not shaped like a point, you have to aim a little lower than this to reach it.

Also, don't grip the cue too tightly, especially if you're using an open bridge (index finger not looped over the top of the shaft). This can cause you to lift the cue off your bridge and hit the ball near its equator, even if you're aiming to practically dig into the cloth. And it can be very hard to tell that you're doing this when it happens, except of course for the fact that you won't be getting much, if any, draw.

How much will it cost me to learn how to jump a ball and then draw the cue ball back half a table to make a ball in the corner pocket, one-handed, like George Breedlove?
