How do you Hold, or What do you do with YOUR Chalk when Playing. I see lots of Gizmos, and Gadgets for holding Chalk, some Guys even Hold the Chalk in their BRIDGE HAND when Shooting.

This Practice is totally STUPID in my opinion as Chalk gets on you Hands, and your Shaft, and then you got Two Messes to CLEAN UP.

Chalk Holder

Personally found the above Gadget a Local Pool & Billiards Supply. Mueller has em also.

Like I said, “How do you Hold, or What do you do with YOUR Chalk when Playing.”

I always just leave it on the table. I bring quite a bit of chalk to large tournaments like the BCA because I usually walk away from it and leave it on the table when I finish. Of course this puts me in the roll of “host” in the symbiotic “host/parasite” relationship in the life cycle of chalk. There are others that fit in the other roll. The balance of nature is everywhere.

I leave mine on the table when I'm shooting, but use magic markers, PINK tape and other methods to identify it,,,people leave the chalk with pink tape alone,,,also write rude messages on bottom of my chalk,,,guess I'm just weird

I used to have the magnetic chalk holder that wasn't my type, now i just use chalk that's on the tables. What is wrong with that?

my chalk is shaped to my tip, not someone elses; 'specially crappy house cues, plus I treat my chalk better than house chalk is treated & actually have a certain way of 'aging' my chalk so it works better for me (trade secret) ;)

Oh ok, i have a couple of pre-american flag chalk in my bag, people go wild over that, i had a guy offer me 50 bucks for a cube of chalk, the pre-american flag, there is is supose to be a difference i guess, so yeah i took him up on that offer.

I don't have my own secret method for aging chalk, but I do always carry my own using a "chalk on a stick" holder. Aside from all the other good reasons noted in this thread I chalk on *every* shot and cannot stand having to reach across or walk half-way around the table to get to wherever the chalk ended up last time. I like this design the most of the others I've tried (see below) but there are 2 flaws to be aware of. Firstly if your chalk is slightly undersized it can fall out easily, so you may have to swap a few to find one that fits snugly. Secondly it only really works on square-cut pockets like most Jeans use. If you have diagonal-cut pockets there is usually not enough tension to hold it in place reliably.

Prior to this I tried the magnetic holder type but found that they either fall off every time you bump the table if the magnet is took weak, or are time consuming to remove if the magnet is too strong.

I also had a Porper "QuikDraw Chalk Caddy" for a while. This utilizes the exact same mechanism as several popular cell phone belt cases, including the one I used at the time. That meant I could just unclip my cell phone and clip on the chalk. However the bi drawback for this type is that the sping-loaded plastic clip section that holds the detactchable part in place is not designed to be used dozens of times an hour. As a consequence I found it quickly wore down to the point where a simple bump could knock it off. I also didn't like the little "click" sound it made.

I use Master brand chalk and nothing else. Anyone else have a favorite brand? Is there one better than Master?

I use a chalk holder. I take a mailing address label and wrap it around the sides for identification in case I leave it on the table (no big loss if I do lose it). I keep it in my pocket and lay it on the table when shooting. Have tried the sticks, magnets and etc. They all tend to get in the way or fall off and get lost.

I have a whole box of the pre flag Masters chalk. How do I get in touch with this guy?

I've never had a problem with my magnetic chalk holder, you can put it anywhere on your belt, so depending on what type of chair you are sitting on you can move it around. Generally i put it on the back of my belt and sit on a stool. Althought the idea is that i won't be sat down too long anyway.

Triangle (blue) is my prefered type of chalk, but it probably depend on tip type and humidity.

All us old pros put the chalk in the oven at 350 degrees. Bakes out all the moisture, and keeps he chalk very dry. Does not cake when you chalk the cue or leave little chunks on the table for me to run over.

Us old pros bake the chalk in the oven at 350 degrees. Makes them dry as a bone. No flakes. No moisture. No caking.

i just keep a chalk in my pocket because i hate it when im away from the table but feel the need to chalk my cue or when there are no good chalks on my side of the table.

Great thread, i always have my chalk with me at all times hehehe, my best friend. I just keep it in my pocket, i use Masters Chalk, Green. I use to use Silver Cup but i find that its fine, and can get your hands all messy, so i switch'd it up. Cole 'TheConArtist

I tried the magnetic holders also. Didn't use their "metal box" just glued a flat washer to the bottom of the cube. Worked OK, but then I noted Karen Corr, and other snooker converts, using a detachable pocket on their waistband. Got mine from floridafred.com, but see that Sir Joseph is now also making them, Just loops over your belt and secures to itself with Velcro. Position it where you want. No mess, no lost chalk and you always have it with you - easy to carry in your case, too.

Adios,

I tried floridafred.com but got a photographers site. Is this the same floridafred that makes wood cue cases? I used to go to that site but there are no cases or chalk holders at www.floridafred.com

Can you provide a link to the chalk holder you are talking about?
Thanks.

Putting it in your pocket will wear you clothing to pieces, literally. Ever see a pair of blue jeans that is frayed at the pocket? Chalk is so abrasive that it will ruin clothing eventually. Plus, it can just be messy.

Magnetic chalk holders suck for several reasons: You can't brush the chalk on if the edge of the cube is covered by the holder. Those that aren't covering the edges are better, but either way, you can accidently leave behind half of your holder and then you've got to go buy the whole thing again.

Those pencil thingies are ok, but as someone said, they don't work for all pants. Plus they have the same problems as the magnetic ones.

Leaving it on the table is ok, but I've seen players lose because they accidently used the crappy house chalk and miscued. But, the advantage to having it on the table is it forces you to walk around the table and this is good for strategy, in 8-ball anyway. If there's more than two cubes, I always remove them so I have to do a little traveling as I shoot. Others mentioned more troubles with using table chalk.

Karen's little bag is ok, but I'm guessing that the chalk can easily fall out and the thing gets messy, and it is made of cloth so I'm also guessing that it wears out, just like clothing does. Plus, it looks a little sissyish, imho.

So, as I tend to do when I can't find what I want, I invented my own. It's a chalk holder that holds just the chalk without any restrictive box around it or washers on the bottom or magnetic dodads. It holds just the cube of chalk, all alone, face down. It's called Chef Jeff's Chalk Cup. It clips to whatever on your person (belt, pocket, waist band, even the hem of my shorts) and when you need to chalk, you just reach down, grab the chalk cube and pull it out of the cup, chalk your tip like a pro, and smoosh it back into the cup, face first. No fumbling, no mess, no fuss, and the best part is, if you accidently leave your chalk on the table, your holder is 100% intact so you don't need to buy another holder, but merely put in another piece of chalk.

Availble soon at Zims.

Wow - no ones getting flamed and no Witchdoctors sharing their " secret knowledge". My kinda thread! I ALWAYS bring my own chalk, though some of it is like me (half-baked) :p. Mostly blue Master. Don't like the texture of other colors. I prefer to shape my own, and discard it much quicker than most.

I do like Silver Cup, cause it's dryer than Masters, but dislike it's ultra-fine grain that will have you & yours blue in no time. (It's texture is similar to well-dried red Masters)

My Pet Peave is the novice player who insists on firmly placing the chalk upside-down after every use, making the rails dirty, grainy & blue. Chalk has a bottom for a reason. Blue rails=blue hand=blue shaft.

I use masters green and have the tip pik chald holder. It stays in my pocket fine and havent actually had any problems with it falling out. I have seen people have issues with the magnetic ones not holding well. I also like to shape and pik my top often so it works for that (makes me feel like im doing something)

Tonight I actually forgot my chalk in my car at my gfs house so I had to use house blue in our playoff match and man it drove me nuts.

Speaking of driving me nuts

This pisses me off as well. My gf and pretty much everyone else I play pool with at my local club put the chalk that way. btw am I the only one expecting "=blue balls" at the end of that?

Ah quick question from you secret gurus of chalk. I bought a box of masters green but its been sitting in my car now for 3 months... its been humid... should i go buy a new box and leave it in a plastic bag or can i salvage the stuff i have?
