How do you know if your ferrule needs replacing soon?

My Venom shaft ferrule has black lines on it and that happens on all Poison and Predator ferrules over time as I've seen and heard... However, I am not sure if those black lines are cracks or just scratches. How can I know? No trouble with playing, but if they are cracks, how do I know?

Like hang, says, usually by the sound it makes when striking the cue ball. In my experience a ticking, or clicking, sound is telltale.
If you see a partial dark line show up on the ferrule then the split may be beginning, but if the line goes from one end of the ferrule to the other then the split may be complete and it's time for replacement Sometimes you can feel it with your thumbnail.
Falling off onto the floor is also a good indicator.

Nope, no funny sounds. But if this is a crack(And it's not 1 end to another), can I fix it somehow and keep it on for a longer time? Like put duct tape or something?

Duct tape will get you back on the road.

A more permanent temporary solution: put the end of the shaft in a vise. Wrap the shaft with some cardboard before clamping the vise down,to avoid shaft damage.

Then make a single loop of bailing wire around the ferrule. Leave enough exposed ends of wire that can be gripped with lineman pliers. Twist the ends until the loop is tight...but not too tight. Repeat until the ferrule is totally encased inside these wire wraps. Try not to pull the ferrule thru your bridging fingers..since those little curly wire twist ends can nick ya.:grin-square:

..or just replace the suspect ferrule.

EDIT: forgot happy face

I purchased an almost new Predator cue several years ago that had a small black line on the ferrule. I figured it was just a manufacturing defect. The guy I sold it to still uses it and it shoots great.

Those black lines can very well be friction burns from the felt or rail. Or some kind of scuff mark

I put in on my lathe and used wet 800 grit paper but it's apparently embedded pretty deep.
