{{{ How do you know when you're in a trap }}}

Please take notes....Unless you're mad at your wallet:p :p

When the other guy changes from lefty to righty ..after you've raised the bet:eek:

When the other guy's backer keeps smiling at you...

When the car the other guy came in has out of state plates..And he tells you"I'm just in town visting some relatives"....

When the local pool detective is going bonkers on the rail, trying to get your attention ..

When the other guy's tip is paper thin (sure sign of a player)

When the other guy whips out a towel(from his case) and cleans the balls thoroughly before the coin flip ..

When the other guy's backer wears a loud Hawaiian-style shirt, gaudy jewelry and he's short and fat . :

When the other guy's stroke looks as effortless as his walking motion(Steve Smith,Scotty Townsend)

When you are up 2 sets and the other guy says "I'll give you the seven ball if you double the bet"...

When the other guy continues to rave about what a "sraight shooter" you are...

When the other guy asks you if you know where the nearest Waffle House is....:p

When the other guy looks vaguely familiar to a guy in last month's Billiard News....WITHOUT THE MUSTACHE .

When the other guy gets a call...Then excuses himself out of the pool hall..When he comes back he says"That was my wife ..I gotta leave in a few ..but I still would like to play but I only have enough time for one set ..can we raise the bet to $$$$$$ ? That way at least one of us can win something .. Is that ok?

When a road players name is mentioned out loud..The other guy looks up knowingly and surveys the room to try to match the face with the voice...

When the other guy asks you to rent the balls ..He' ll say "Damn,I left my License on the dresser(digging in his pockets)..I've got money though(shows a little cash)..You mind getting the balls?(he does'nt want to be ID)

If you see yourself in any of these scenarios AZ...Run!!!! ..don't walk..:p

Good Luck .

That's a pretty good list.

Just seeing stuff like that can slow some players down...

How about you back the guy, that has beaten everyone in your town for the last month, against a total stranger that likes to bet it up and lose! This is the hustle called 2 brothers and a stranger.....and your the stranger.

I never did quite figure out how that hustle worked. Can you explain it to me?

After a couple of hours of this, Paul Newman and Mary Elizabeth walk into the bar...;)

Walt, add this to your list. After you beat the player out of a little bit, he quits and the backer says he'll try you some, then after a few games of breaking even wants to raise the bet.

You are playing "Sam" on the barbox for three hundred a set. You make a phone call and yell out "Rudolfo!" and Sam turns towards you and says "what?"

You are playing a guy with a Cuetec and he asks how to play Texas Express. Then asks how much time you have.

Looks just like a Mexican fellow that works near you, or is it Phillipino?

Your opponent is tired and has time for ONE MORE SET.

Everyone bets on the killer player that they have seen thrashing everyone in town all week... but he dumps to the stranger that straggles into the room, looking for a big game... Then they split the money outside....

Once when I was 19, I was hustled by two strangers that wanted to play doubles... turned out that the partner that I chose was their friend, so he would just play great while I messed-up or he would miss if I got too hot. Either way, I lost. Thank God I was only betting a few bucks a game.

Only gambled once on doubles after that, since it was a lock.

I've been down that road before..It's nothing nice!!!!

That reminded me; one of my friends and I playing a couple of buddies. The two guys knew my buddy was decent at pool but didn't know I played and both of them were decent if not a bit better than my buddy. Being confident I guess they put money on the game and my buddy picked me as a partner. I was already on my fourth crown & coke when I came to the table. I basically ran out two games in a row and my buddy walks up and hands me $40. Apparently, we were playing for money. :D

All in good fun though. They haven't played me for money since. :(

And I Kept A Staight Face The Entire Time

Around 1968 I was playing a guy in a bar some 8-ball for $10 a game and I'd been beating him for hours. He says that he has to get some more money from home (there weren't any ATMs back then) and would I play his brother for $10 a game when he returned. I was hitting them good and winning alot of money (for the 60s) and said, "SURE." He wanted to know if I'd raise the bet and play for $20 a game when he returned and give him a chance to get his money back and I said, "OK."

He was gone for almost an hour and when 'they' got back, I almost fell on the floor. His 'brother' was MY brother. :)
Doug
( I just barely managed to beat 'his brother' out of the rest of HIS money )

Cuban Joe and Billy Johnson (Wade Crane) pulled this move on me in my poolroom in Bakersfield. When the bet got to 50 a game 9-Ball (in 1972 dollars), Billy woke up.
