how do you play this game

I just started paying attention to it and think its pretty dang awesome
but I dont understand anything about it

I see in a match they will some times hit the red ball first then choose to hit the other cue ball first
 
Here's the basic rules.for 3Cushion. There are several other Carom games.
You have on CB
Your opponent has the other.
Your CB must contact both your opponents CB and the RED in any order plus your CB must contact 3 or more rails BEFORE the second ball is touched by your CB.

You can hit any number of rails prior to any ball being hit. You simply have to get the rails required before the second OB is contacted.

Get Robert Byrne's Standard Book of Pool and Billiards. He explains the game completely for the beginner. He has lots of practice shots. He shows with good illustrations pretty much all of the shots a new player should know. You can get a used copy delivered to your house for about $6. Here is one site:

(I would not recommend Huepper's books for a beginner. I think a player needs to be up around 0.5 or 0.6 to be able to use the ideas there.)

And I see you are in Houston. There are lots of carom tables now in Houston. You should get yourself down to one of the new rooms.
