How good is Fong Pang Chao

Where does he rank among the world's best?

He never seems to get mentioned in the same breath as the great Fillipinos and Amercians but the man has won some serious tourneys over the years.

Chao definitely ranks among the best in the world. I've seen him contemplate low percentage shots for a few minutes during tournament play. Then, as the shot clock winds down on him, he bends over and effortlessly fires the ball getting perfect position as if the shot were routine.

Besides, he was one of only two or three two-time International Challenge of Champions winners when he was invited last year (in place of Wu). He showed up as a replacement, and became the first ever three-time winner. How's that for good?!

I had never seen him in person (playing) until last nite vs Hohmann. He was probably the guy i wanted to see most who i had never seen.

He has to be one of the all time greats but man did he suck last nite vs Hohmann. Missing hangers, moving on every shot, looking totally uncomfortable. Something seems to be very wrong with his game at the moment. Im sure it is temporary.

He played magnificently against Souquet the night before.

I didn't see the Chao-Souquet match but Chao had to be shooting alright the night before to pull off that win. The score indicated that it was pretty one-sided.

When he is "on", he's unbeatable. I would say he battles with nerves a little more than the other top players, and maybe isn't always "in stroke" when he should be. I think those issues, and maybe an average break, are slight differences which prevent him from being the totally dominant player he could be with his perfect patterns, ball control, and exceptional accuracy.

He has won the World Champ in Cardiff twice (1993 and 2000)
He has also won the Challenge of Champions at Mohegan Sun three times (1995?, 2001, 2005)

He will play some if the game is right.

Just in case you haven't seen these, check the two links below, they both are related to Chao in Challenge of Champions events

Alex tried and did not like it a couple of years ago. He did not miss a ball in 4 days. Yes that was 4 days. Alex said theres 6 or 7 guys in Tawain that he can't beat.

Yeah and Efren never really robs a tournament- He gets lucky. Just talk and maybe a little lemonade.

There probably are 10 guys in Taiwan that can give Alex a game but not one of them is a real favorite. Play in the Phillipines, Canada or the US and Alex is the clear favorite- JOIHO!

That's great.

My favorite Fong Pang Chao match is when he played Corey Deuel a few years ago, I think it was when Chao won the WPC. Corey played phenomenal, almost perfect pool, as Corey can do - he was really in stroke - and Chao still beat him. That tactical match was just sensational.

Hi guys, take a look at 1993 WPC finals (I think it won't be hard to download somewhere on the net). That's what I call perfect 9ball. ;)

Chao is, quite simply, one of the best nine ball players of all time, surely one of the twenty greatest. Like so many other Taiwanese players that steered clear of the mainstream intenrational pool scene, he is far more obscure than he should be. Nonetheless, his performances in the few major events in which he did play leave little doubt that he's worthy of being counted among nineball's greatest legends.
