How Good is your CHALK ?

Ok, I got bored in NPR today, and starting practicing in the basement. I use Magic chalk just cause I like it, because I can shoot drills over and over without chalking all the time, and that's a great benefit.

So, todays drills, chalking once using on a Kamui SS tip, playing on a 9 foot Brunswick using a sneaky pete OB cue.

10 long angle cuts hitting center ball. ob and cb about 5 diamonds apart
10 long follow shots (full table speed) ob and cb about 5 diamonds apart
10 draw shots. (ob was 2 diamonds out, cb 2 diamonds away from ob, and draw 3-4 diamonds.
10 long draw shots. Now put cue ball 1 diamond out from short rail, and tried to draw back to short rail.
10 medium stop shots, hitting softer, and using a lower tip position (not center) ob and cb about 4 diamonds apart

Ok, back to long draw shots. From two diamonds from short rail, trying to draw the cb that was 2 diamonds away from pocket on other end. Trying to draw as far as I humanely could. At shot 6 I miscued. Not ball in the air miscue, cause I still hit the ball good, but it just slide off at the wrong angle, hit about a 1/4 of the ob, and that was it.

56 shots without chalking.

I always thought I'd like to play league one night without ever chalking after the first shot. (5 games of 8ball) Based on this unscientific study, factoring in a handful of safeties and a couple of missed shots over 5 games, I think it is doable :)

Now if anyone wants to put their chalk to the test, lets hear the results. I don't know if Magic chalk is better or worse than anything out there, but at the price, it seems to be pretty darn good.

Yes, we all know for some chalking is part of their pre-shot routine, this is just to see if some chalks are as good as advertised.

Would love to know how many shots you can get out of Diamond, Kamui, and regular old Masters... maybe even some Silver cup :)

I have no investment in what chalk is better, so if yours can beat this mark, excellent, post it up. If you miscue after 3 shots and spent over $1.00 per cube, I'd like to know about that too :)

Why shoot more then one shot without chalking?

I personally don't like taking the time to chalk between shots. I used to use Kamui chalk and when the last little bit of my original piece walked away one night I started using Masters again. I found that I still don't have to chalk every shot unless I'm juicing up the cue ball quite a bit. I'll usually just chalk before my first shot of the inning. It's more the stroke than the lack of chalk that causes miscues.

I have some Blue Diamond and some Magic chalk, unused.
I'll start using them when Masters and Triangle stop doing their job.

I like chalking often 'cause I'm always rubbing the edge which keeps
the tip dime-shape.

I keep a piece of Kamui chalk in case Smurfette runs outta make-up.

Same Speed as Me

My chalk plays the same speed that I do. Not sure how that works. All through my life, I think my chalk has improved as my game improves.

I am surprised by this. Actually, curious about it. I'm sure that some college academian could do a high priced study and charge it to the government to figure out how my chalk keeps improving.

Chalk is Chalk too me I don't feel right unless I Chalk before each shot thats just me

Which is true for many folks.... but do folks that spend $30 for one piece of chalk, still chalk after every single shot ?? If they do, then it is over kill and over spending ...

I chalk up on almost every shot, It`s part of my pre shot routine. The kamui chalk is very good, it makes it possible to shoot several shots between chalking, the downsides is the price and the mess it makes on the table.
I have all kinds of chalk: Masters, blue diamond, silver cup, predator, pre flag masters, gold star, nir and a few more, and i must admit that the differences are minimal.
Two types of chalk stands out as the worst ones: Silver Cup and Gold Star.
Nir and Predator seems a bit more powdery and therefor lasts a bit longer, but at the same time makes more mess.
So i use Masters, pre flag Masters and Blue Diamond and they all feel pretty much the same.

I used to be surprised by miscues, but as I get better I know when I'm approaching the english/draw
limit and I'm not surprised anymore. Sometimes I just feel one coming and know I need to ease up.

I don't think brand of chalk matters. It just needs to be there. It's easy to get lazy about it,
even if it's part of your routine, because a lot of players don't visually inspect the tip
every single time they chalk to ensure it's coated evenly.

If you have some heavily used cored-out POS cube, you might find that only half the tip
is covered unless you brush carefully.

It'd be cool if someone could track all the miscues throughout a player's career in a year,
and find out what brand of chalk they used. With enough players,
a pattern might emerge. I don't think 50 or 100 shots will prove anything
like "This chalk brand is the best".

It needs to be thousands of shots under a wide variety of conditions.

I agree, and this is not about the "best chalk", only which ones hold up the longest... again, if someone chalks up on every single shot... heck, they could use Silver Cup or Masters, and prolly never miscue unless they hit the ball to far outside the "lines" or hit the table first....

I really liked Blue Diamond best until I started using the Cuel brand that came with my Q-Pod. It seems to coat the surface of the UltraSkin tips a little better, and lasts for several shots without the tip starting to look bare.

I use Kamui, Predator would be my second choice. I chalk every shot. I use a chalk holder so I don't lose it. Lasts 4 to 6 months so price really isn't a factor. On my home table for practice, I have several pieces of Predator.

My only complaint with Kamui is the marks it leaves on the cb.

Then why not use a chalk that does not leave any marks, especially if you are gonna chalk after every shot. And then pay 30x more for the privilege

It's been my experience that the Kamui leaves marks on the cue ball and they transfer to the table cloth, which I don't like.
