Last night on the science channel one of their regular programs called How It's Made did a segment called billiard cues.....Did anybody by chance watch it. or maybe even taped it. Anybody know what cues they were talking about. I know when they advertise the show they also show some type of cue contraption also breaking and shooting balls. How/is there anyway to find out when that one might be showing...........................mike

I managed to record the last four minutes or so of it. Missed the first part waiting for my machine to initialize. arg.

All I saw was making the butt and the inlays, then stamping "Falcon" on them.
 
I haven't looked at their website in a long time but McDermott (spelling) use to have a video about making their cues.
 
The Discovery Channel is now in season 2 of How It's Made. Episode 1 had the pool table construction, episode 2 had the cue being built at the Falcon facility prior to their moving from Canada to overseas.

If you look closely at the beginning and end of that segment, you will notice not only some Falcons, but a couple of Predators as well.

I actually got in an argument with the ol' man over this segment! I understand that the segment is designed to give someone a rudimentary understanding of how a cue is made...but most here know that there is more involved to it than what they show.

The argument came over the CNC work. Sound familiar?!:rolleyes: His basic response to the segment was...."that's it? They have a machine do it for them?! And they charge big money for that?!!" Well, I was off and running with that remark...lol. I had to explain to him that first off, that episode is dealing with a large production facility...not a one or two man shop. Also, there is more time spent making a cue with veneered points...but that many cuemakers use CNC to cut inlays and inlay pockets, whether they are making a cue with sharp veneered points, or elaborate floating point designs. I tried to explain that someone has to come up with those designs, and that is time-consuming in and of itself.

Let's just suffice to say....I never in a million years thought that the ol' CNC debate would wind up in my own living room!!!:eek:

I think the show gave the false impression that building cues is an easy task...when nothing could be further from the truth!!!

Well, at least they did not try to show how decal cues were made in that show.:confused:

If they did, lots of people might think all inlays are decals and are put on like instant tatoos.
