How long did it take you to become a good pool player?

I heard that he hasn't yet, but keep asking questions the answers will come.
Wishing a Happy L&L DAY, to all.

I laid off for 18 yrs, thought I was pretty good before that, then got back in and found out I wasn't as good as I thought I was. Now I am, I think. It's all relative...there's only ten people in the world in the top 10 and I'm not one of them.

Let me get back to you on that ......

Its been a long trip, and there's still miles , upon miles to go..:indecisive:

I started playing when I was 15 and by the time I was 18 I was able to hang with the big boys and give them a run for their money on a regular basis. Then came a woman (will save you from the horror story of her pawning my SE Falcon) Here I am 27 and just played my first year of league since I was 18 and MAN!!! I can run a few racks, but I do so many boneheaded things on the table. Missing easy combos or over running an easy positional shot. Its like I have it, but it disappears in an instant. My buddy got me into pool again after I moved on to greener pastures and the line he gave me was "It's like riding a bike" I can say I am half the player I used to be and I hope it doesn't take 3 years to learn it all again. Anyone else have a layoff and got back on the tables and have the same problem?

its a tough one bro...stroke in the coke bottle...off top of the phone book..find ur flaws,...break em..embrace em...aha!

This is a tough question considering the personal ways a pool player understands himself, but.........I've been playing two years, and I only consider myself acceptable

It kinda depends on what's your definition of "good".

In my opinion most people don't even have what it takes to become a genuine "A" player... Whether it's the lack of efforts or lack of talents. Or both.

Started in my HS days, played for 2 years, then took a full time job as a couch potato for 17 years.. started playing about a year ago..
I don't know what is considered good, I can beat majority of ppl at pubs.. but at this local pool joint where very good to top ranked Hong Kong players play.. I am way below their game... I hope to be ranked top 10 in HK after 5 more years of playing... (Oh and thats about when I think my Searing Cue arrives as well)
And there is a 8-ball tournament there tonite, lets hope I get past first round ;)

Still Learning !

I have come back to pool from a long lay-off due to life's circumstances. Been LMAO reading all the posts in this thread, (saying,"that's me ! ,that's me !"). I have got my stroke and aim back, but i'm still lacking in the mental wars section. One time i'm shooting lights-out, the next i'm totally disgusted with myself. I figure I am about 75% back to my prior young years.

"Good" seems subjective to me. How do you define it ? Relative to what ? Personally? by the bar/league you are in? The region, country, entire pool world?

How many times have you seen a professional team get beat by the team with the worst record? Not often, BUT it does happen.

Kudos to a place like AZ where we can stop and all (continually) learn from it and one-another !

hey Dunnn51,
Good post. Now what does that mean to you? Just that, good! There is good and bad. Left and right. It does not mean you have to be a pro, just play pool good! Everyone should know what Good! Means. Someone could be better than you but that does not mean you are not good.
Many Regards,
Lock N load.

Good luck on getting pass the first round in the 8 ball tournament. Just because you get beat by someone does not mean you are not good. Remember that! Practice more and try running 9 balls in one pocket, call the pocket before you break the balls. Anything you make on the break that does not go in your called pocket goes back up on the spot. Let me know how you make out? Thanks.

"Good"

Hello Lock&Load,

It was not my intent to put you on the spot, it is just my analytical nature to define the box then I know the boundaries.

It seems you are gauging what I feel is "good", I'll use a personal perspective.

"Good", to me personally is when I'm hitting on all cylinders when i'm holding a pool cue. "Good" is when my aim & stroke are just right. "Good" is when I have the felt on a particular table dialed up and can spot the ball for position on defense or offense. "Good" is when it gets quiet around the table and I have the eye of the tiger on. (Something my father acceled at). "Good" is when I'm making the correct decisions for position to run out. "Good" in short is when I execute perfectly.

Lately it has been rare,...... But it feels damn "Good" when it happens !

I feel that you are probably more "Good" than myself.

I am posting often here as a newbie in hopes of some here can get to know me.

Thanks for responding !

Enjoy your time on AZB it is the best pool forum in the world.

Thanks

Thanks LockNLoad,

I truly appreciate that !

I as well enjoy helping others with what I know, and try to do same w/o sounding like a know-it-all (I'm far from it!)

Thank you for the welcome

I am by no means a "good" player, but I am constantly improving as of late. Practice is key, but it's not how often you practice, but how you practice. Getting in the grease will improve your game a lot as well. the reason why is because you play every shot like you have money on it, because you do. When I started applying this to my practice routine, I started seeing significant gains. I take half as many shots in a session now, but the quality of those shots is ten fold better.

best,

Justin

P.S. I love the comment, "I'm not a good payer but..."

The thing is you have to work harder and never give up. Exercise , practice every time you have the ocasion , play against better opposition and be patient!

Still pending unfortunately. I'm just not naturally talented. Takes a lot of work when your not. I've played with people that just picked up the game and are way better than I am. sigh.
