How many cues have you smashed? Discussion inside!

How many? What brand? How much were they? Did you actually own them at the time you put a cue out of it's misery? Did the cue have it coming?

I'll go first;

I broke, not one, but two Earl Strickland graphite shaft cues, with rubber wraps, only a few weeks apart. I spent about $65 per cue. I purchased the second, identical cue, because I was afraid that people would know that I broke my cue, or just ask questions about it. I then promptly smashed the second cue after trying to put a new tip on it, without any success. In retrospect, that cue(s) had it coming. Big time.

broken cue....

How many? I have broken 1 to date. What brand? It was a viking, luckily i had 2.How much were they? 90$ to replace, but like i said luckily I had 2. Did you actually own them at the time you put a cue out of it's misery? at the time i was an ambassador for viking and they had given me the cue and 2 shafts, so i never paid for it.Did the cue have it coming? here is the abridged version, i was playing a set for 50$ a race to 7 even 9 ball, i had the kid stuck 6-1, long story shot i missed the 9, 2 9 ball snaps and i lost 7-6. i graciously paid my opponent, walked away and raised the shaft over my head and slammed it as hard as i could onto the floor shattering it into about 1000 pieces, it was at the green room, and they were picking up pieces for days. lol, haven't broken one since then... no broken cues for at least 2 years.

Hmmmmm...The Green Room...I have to get over there soon for a Monday night nine ball tournament soon.

I broke a Huebler shaft a few years ago. Playing in the semifinals of a B barbox tournament. Didn't try to. I just let the tip drop to the ground and the shaft snapped. Had to play with my buddies break cue. Ended up loosing because of the cue.

A few years later I lost out of a weekly tournament. Was really disgusted with my play and hit my Joss shaft on the ground after I had taken my cue appart. $135 down the drain. Snapped it real good. I was very embarrassed and felt like an idiot.

I ended up superglueing the shaft back together. It still works fine. You wouldn't even know unless you looked really close. I use it as my backup now. I'm not going to break with it though.

Hopefully I'll never do anything stupid like that again.

a friend of mine broke his cue over his knee, destroying both butt and joint. i told him he should carry a "break cue"

1 cue, a Meucci Original O-4, black linen open wrap, $800, in 1986. It met it's end, on the coner of a Glod Crown IV, don't ask. :D

I guess I learned from the experience of others. :D

When I was in my very late teens, I worked in a pool room and watched a number of angry players break their cues. Some were cheap and some were expensive.
I never could figure out what the cues did to deserve such treatment.

When I finally bought my first cue, an inexpensive custom from a local cue maker, I vowed to treat it with proper respect. Since then, I have purchased a number of custom cues, and I have never broken one........yet. :D

My father slammed his case down on a table in disgust after a loss and broke the original spare shaft that came with his Hubbart cue that was inside the case. It was a solid round case that folded over with latches.

He also slammed the butt of the cue down another time and busted the sleeve.

I broke the shaft of my Huebler sneaky. I was at the pool hall playing and someone dropped their cue on the floor. I said something to the effect of, "That's right, throw it on the ground and dropped my cue gently, or so I thought to the ground with my arm fully extended downward. Well, it fell butt first, hit the bumper and bounced and the tip hit the floor and snapped the shaft in half. I couldn't believe that it broke and i was stunned. I replaced the shaft with a $40 player's shaft but it played like ass so I sold it to my brother for like $50...lol.

One broken buttcap on a Josswest. He really should put much bigger bumpers on his cues! :p

I started playing this game seriously, maybe 16 years ago when i was around 40. For the first 5 years i was the heavy favorite to miss any and every shot. It was clear to any thinking American i had zero talent or ability but i couldnt accept that. I was at the pool room every nite practicing. I loved the game, the atmosphere, the road trips everything but it took all I had not to break my stick every time i went to the table and i am being dead serious.

As it was i broke probably 7-8 sticks in my first 5 years playing. Probably half i broke playing by myself!!
I never felt bad about any of them-All the sticks were in the $125-$500 range.

In the past 5 years i have learned to make a ball sometimes and i have not broken a single one though a couple could have broken easily as hard as i put them down.

I used to throw my cues, beat them on the table and everything else that someone would consider stick abuse but surprisingly I can't remember any of them breaking....but then again I have owned alot of cues and never sold them and I have no idea where they could be.

I've broke ZERO that I owned. If you guys made them it'd help ease the urge when you want to slam one. I did break an ex buddy of mine's, who was no longer a friend. I should not of even of been gambling, especially not posting up with him. He kept raising the bet, again and again. At the end of the night he did not even have cash for the table time. And thought it was funny saying "come on man relax we are friends". He owed just over 4 digits and I knew he was headed back to TN the next day and I was out of luck...he would not go outside to discuss either. At the time I felt I had no choice...I busted his beloved Meucci into mutiple pieces. I know, I know...but I was younger...but it did indeed make me feel better. I figured that way I'd get in less trouble than breakin' his legs. Funny, he doesn't call when he's in town anymore...LOL!!!

I feel you. I think I let my emotions fly even more when there is nobody around to be embarrassed by my actions but myself.

If you were anywhere 50 feet of my basement, you would think an entire roller derby team were down there with me, when in reality it's just me by myself shooting.

What tournament? What's the entry? What are the payouts like? Handicapped?

And lastly, will they still run during the summer?

Funny...I use to have this real bad habit of screaming..."get in the hole you whore" when I'd miss a ball when practicing. Then I wondered if the people living next door thought I had hole in the basement that I made my wife stay in!!! I can hear them discussing it now..."poor girl...she doesn't seem like a whore...honey call the po-lice and get her outta that hole"!!!

LOL...That's pretty funny. I've said the exact same thing, although it is usually at the pool hall!

Again, I have not been there on Monday in a while, BUT lots of TAP and APA people I shoot with are regulars on Mondays.

Call first (Jose is the room owner now) but if it is like I remember; Get there at 6:30 for free open practice (as long as you enter the tournament) start at 7:30 for handicapped 9 ball. If your not rated, they will use your current APA or TAP ranking to set your Skill Level. I've heard the turnout is about 30 people for the tournament, up from when I last went. They also have a buy in after your first loss, don't remember the rules specific to that. I really need to make it over there; I live minutes away, and our APA team has a break due to our too early exit from the playoffs. Payouts are top heavy, about $200 or so, something like that. Last time I heard of people winning the money, the first/second place shooters are likely to split the pot, since it's normally late at that point, and most of the losing competitors have left at that time.

I have never broken a cue.

Every single one of my cues is in excellent condition and ready for use, even the oldest ones (30+ years). I keep the shafts clean and smooth as glass. The butts are always clean and waxed and the wraps are like new. It helps that I have my own cue repair lathe and do all my own work, plus I am absolutely obsessive about removing the chalk from the tips and wiping the cue down completely before I put them back in the case.

I've seen guys break their cues, to me that kind of thing is childish and embarrasing.

I've owned cues that I didn't like, and so I found buyers who did like them. I've even given a couple away, and made some poor souls happy. IMO, those are far better alternatives to destroying an inanimate object in a fit of rage.

I have been playing for about ten years and had never thrown or broke a cue until two weeks ago, when I threw my cue after playing a terrible match in the playoffs. I was lucky it did not break. It is just a Viking sneaky pete.

I find that the better I start to play lately the more angry I get when I don't play up to my standards. I really need to find a way to fix this major problem.
