How many have one of these?

You guys are funny. I didn't say sit on the lathe. When sitting I'm positioned exactly the same if I was standing. The danger factor is exactly the same. My hands, arms, and face are in the same place. Sitting or standing. My butt is in a different place. How hard is that to understand.
I'm comfortable and every tool I need is in it's place and is within reach. I don't reach across a spinning lathe. If I'm changing a tool I shut off the lathe. No reason to leave the damn thing running.

A lot of real watchmakers, also sit down when they are using there lathes. Mainly because it is difficult to work through a magnifing setup while standing. Also alot more comfortable. The more alert you are , the least mistakes you will make.

I think you got a great setup!

I have a very similar set-up. Very comfortable, convenient and much less tiring. Mine is not as complete, no TV (BTW what's the TP for?.... nevermind I don't want to know :) ).

The piece of TP is cheeper then a hole sheet of paper towel. Lets see pictures of your shop.
This thread would be a lot more fun if everybody showed shop pictures.

It looks like the head rest of the chair is even with the lathe bed to me. That was my concern. I don't want to get hit in the face with wood chips or exploding cutters. If you like the setup great. I think people were posting out of safety concerns.

You must have been standing at your computer when you looked
at the pic:) The bed of the lathe is about 6 inches higher than the armrests of the chair, which would put the centerline of the chuck
about mid-chest height.

As for the poster who imagined issues with dangling sleeves and
shirt parts - that is of no more<and perhaps even less concern
when you are sitting> and besides why would you ever make
the error of wearing clothing that could get caught in machines
in the first place.

BTW - if you are refering to wing cutters - standing up isn't going
to save you from flying shrapnel, when, not if it comes apart.
Please tell me you have some kind of sheild to contain the pieces.

Dale<who totured the bug about safety till he gave up>

The only time I have to sit is when I'm doing non-machinery type work.
Leather wraps and gluing and such..........
Running machines is not for the faint at heart or lazy. When I'm at the lathe I usually have 1 or 2 other machines running so it would be more work for me to get up everytime one of the others needed a shaft or butt replaced for tapering.
I fully understand the back pain and tired legs and stiff necks and sore arms and headaches (not from the other half either) but when your around any type of machines at all, you have to be as sharp and ready as you ever want.
From a simple hand held drill to a 4500 lb milling machine you can and people have been maimed and/or killed as fast as you can blink your eye.
They are not toys no matter what size they may be.
I hope everyone here walks into their shop today and looks around to find one thing they could make safer in their daily doings.

Safety is a full time job and should never take rest in any part or walk of your life. People are killed every single day simply by just being plain stupid and worst of all just not paying attention to their surroundings.
I have been very lucky and have come very close on a few different occasions to not be able to be here and type these words.

Keep your eyes and ears open and most importantly keep your mind sharp.
(stepping down off the box and turning it back over to you)

Be safe............
