How many people at your hall, can you talk to about the finer points of pool?

I've been a regular of many pool halls in the past. I move around quite a bit and have been a regular at many halls. I've found that there is almost no one that I can have a good discussion about pool with. Allow me to clarify, I don't mean about a game on TV last week, or last weeks league, or the time some guy played for big money. I'm talking about things like, cuemakers and thier cues, physics (deflection, throw), players/makers/history of years past.

For example I was talking to a guy who owns nearly 30 cues, I thought he would be a great guy to talk to about cue makers of then and now. I start talking about southwest, richard black, tim scruggs, and things go great. Then I hear from him that Tim Scruggs is retired because he's sick, didn't know who Jerry franklin was, and hears that Richard Black isn't making cues anymore either. First I know his info is both out of date and limited. He only knows about cues he owns. No big deal really, but when I talk to him about Samsara, Cognoscenti, Hercek, or Searing, he doesn't know any of them. Well I can't expect everyone to know about all the different cue makers out there, but when you own 30 cues... well. It turns out only 5-6 are custom, the rest production.

Another example is when I'm talking to probably the best player at my currently most frequent hall. I talk about throw and he doesn't know it by name, but does know the concept. He says if you cut a ball soft, you need to aim thin. This in principle is correct. I know you don't need to know physics to play great pool. It's just that when I talk to him about deflection and/or squirt he's not sure what I'm talking about. I supposed he's been playing long enough that he unconsciously compensates without knowing.

So, I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone know people at your hall where you can have a good meaningful conversation about cues, makers, history, physics, etc. The stuff beyond "pool small talk"? I think this is why I love this forum, there's a wealth of knowledge here that is difficult to find at your local hall.

You Sir sound like an elitist snob!@#

The man owns over 30 cues, what more do you want from him?

On a really good day.... all three barmaids.

There are at least two dozen players I can have such a conversation with at Amsterdam Billiards. Possibly three dozen.

There are a few in my area that I can talk with, but one guy who I thought would be knowlegeable because he's such a good player didn't even know what the ferrule of a cue was.

When I lived in NYS, MOST of the regulars. In South Carolina, VERY few. In the last five years, it's been mostly my own fault. I haven't gone to the places that the players frequent. At the local "pool room", and I use the term VERY loosely, almost all are very casual players, who don't know cues, games, good players, pro players, etc.

Yeah, but at Amsterdam, you are a short cab ride away from the best freaking pastrami in the world. All we got is greasy frozen burgers. I'd be the Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche of my poolroom if I could just get ahold of some decent pastrami and a Dr. Browns. :D

I agree that most ppl I know at the pool hall know very little about the physics of pool or about what shot is the best in certain situation. I guess that's why I spend so much time on this forum.. (when I should be working... :-P)

But the worst is when ppl who don't know anything and have a hard time pocketing 3 balls in a row start giving advice or commenting on equipment. (Which is fine, but some ppl are so damn insistent that they are right.) I just nod my head in agreement and shoot the shot my own way... (And god forbid I mess it up, then I never hear the end of how their shot was the right shot, etc.)

Not Necessary

That was unnecessary. I'm asking a simple question, if you read my thread I only asking who has good conversations and I gave examples of unsuccessful attempts on my part. From reading one post you call me a snob. I just really want more knowledge and to be better educated. There are people here that have 100 times more knowledge than I do. Are they snobs because they know a great deal about pool?

Completely uncalled for.

WHOA!

Sorry (no sarcasm) if I offend you.

I am just trying to have fun with you, not make fun of you.

I understand that sometimes its nice to have a conversation with someone who knows the finer points of exotic cues, history, and the game.

I'll rep you up to make up for any hard feelings.

Again, I was just tring to have fun. Pool is fun, and for the most part, it's because the people who play pool are fun to hang with, as are most people on this MB.

Don't take anything anybody types into a fancy thinking box too seriously, and don't believe everything you read.

man this would have been my first argument on the forum, no need for rep man. It's just hard to tell if there's sarcasm or not unless you throw up one of these -> :D ;) :)
I got thrown off with the use of @# and those things people type when they seem mad. Alright man you got me. I didn't know. No hard feelings. Rep to you for a good joke at my expense. ;)

PS I'm jealous of you guys who can talk to a live person about pool.

I live in louisvillle kentucky and I would say there are quite a few people I can talk about the finer points of the game with in terms of playing.

Cues...not so much....physics not at all.

But I can't think of a better area to be in to talk about shooting pool.

Who cares if someone can talk about the difference between cocobolo and rosewood and their respective effects on the balance and hit of a..blah blah blah blah...pointless talk for a player...I would rather not know the difference between sniper and a moori and be able to string a 6 pack together a few times a month than the other way around....

At the end of the day Scruggs/franklin/Bushka/insert name here/ dosent do a thing for pool...the guys using his stick however does..

you cant really blame people for not watching pool and keeping up with the pros...why there isnt any future in it....the people that need to know about them (other pros, high level players) do.....

Cant define squirt....and make the shots
Can define squirt...couldnt hit the short rail with your cue...

where would you rather be ?

Dittos for Chris's here in Chicago, even without the pastrami. :D

There was a guy here working on capturing on video, the world record for the amount of balls made in one shot. I think it was something like 40 maybe more. They let him borrow a table for a few months and had all this sophisticated camera equipment set up when he was there. Really nice guy but once you got him started talking about the physics of pool, the conversation would go so far over my head it would hurt. :D

I'll give you history, but I would hardly call the rest of those things the "finer" points of pool.

I can only speak for myself, but I start running in the opposite direction when anyone starts talking about numbers 1, 2, and 4 on your list. I mean, RUNNING.

And the only reason I'm giving you history is because we owe a debt of gratitude to those who came before us. I'm really not sure how that one could be considered one of the finer points either.

P.S. I respect cuemakers' work very much; please don't read this post and infer anything else.

There are several dozen players at the pool room I play at that could share these conversations. Of course, not every person can talk about every subject. :)

I pretty much agree with your above consensus, but those that play allot and not very good, still have smart information once in awhile if your willing to listen, doesn't take allot of effort to listen. I used to watch ball bangers play in my down time, things they do I would never of thought of, but did practice and improve my game because they would make shots mistakenly that I never imagined.

There are a few guys like that around the place I usually play at but I rarely engage them. I am not a bullshitter and I don't care much for a bunch of small talk. When I go to play it is for a reason....do some drills, play random folks or enter the tournament. In fact I get highly annoyed if I start playing someone and they end up wanting to stop and stand around gabbing the whole time about stuff instead of actually playing. Exception being of course hot women....they can talk to me all they like about pretty much anything particularly if it involves dirty bad fun:D:D

LOLOLOLOLOLOL

I'll test this out for everyone tonight when I see Steve and ask him about squirt.

Local Knowledge

Out here in Riverside, Ca at Shooters we are lucky to have a veteran player (mid 70's?) named Don who is both a FINE PLAYER and very analytical thinker. He knows and applies the principles of spheroid physics in his play-to HOOK YOU, run out on you, out pattern play you and just plain beat you.
He plays all games well, although he'd rather be playing 14.1 or 1P instead of 9 ball.

He has a wealth of experience in all games as well as a command of the technical aspects of ball collision mechanics, table variables (cushions, cloth, humidity, dirty/clean balls/ cloth and cue construction- especially shaft tapers.

He doesn't preach, but is very generous with his knowledge to those who ask his opinion. A class guy. A living vanishing pool resource-a rare breed of player- he can play and he definitely can teach you if you will ask and then listen.

Thank you Don
