How many pool cues have you bought?

I bought my first cue at age 18 in late 1996/early 1997, a lower-end meucci used off a friend for $180.

Bought my second cue about 11 years later in December of 2007. Around that same time, I found this board. Seven scant months later I've bought now a total of 12 cues. I've sold most, though, so I currently own four.

And then there's the six or so cases I've bought, the four or so sets of custom JPs, numerous shafts I've bought and sold, and all the times I changed the wrap on my cues until I just settled on wrapless.

Thankfully, I think I've finally settled on a main player, a backup and a J/B. At least until next month...

I've bought about 12 all told. I also dig a little inlay work. I also appreciate cue builders who orient the woods to max. pretty grain.

me too, I could write a book on why I like cues, I havent really seen one yet I didnt like, well one it brings back bad memories, and one other cue I sold-just a 8pt peterson loaded with ivory, I was on short $$$ but I could have afforded to keep it, I cant stand it!!! when I think of it. I wouldnt have ever sold it, its not about the $$$ for me in cues most of the time, I did flip alot of cues, I have a few cues right now I want to sell just so I can buy a few other cues.

I saw a Gus/Barry Szam or a GSB #1. I could have bought for $6500 in 93,93 or 94(i remember the cue real well just not the year) that a good friend bought last year for $30 something K and got a good deal, I wasnt upset that it went up over $30,000 I just wished I bought the cue-I didnt because it was too fancy to play with, I knew it was a smart $$$ play but that didnt matter I was looking for a player. I would really like it if my friend sells me that particular cue some day-yes its you Marsman  I just want that cue because of the history of the cue and me playing with it years ago etc. At least I know it has a good home.

I have some cues I will never sell, I'll be the only homeless guy living out of a shopping cart who ownes a Szam. They hold a special piece of me groeing up in them, its hard to explaine, Also I love some of Szams designs as a cue maker I like a higher % of his cues than any other cue maker in terms of just looks, about 85% of the Szams look great. I really like his points on a 4 point cue, they are the right porportion, the length the taper of the points they wat they come down to the wrap, his points are 100% the best points-looks wise.

The Bushkas are just amazing to me for other reasons, the precision they are constructed with is second to none, they are straighter than any cues possible, I have a couple that arnt but most are. Geroge had a different way of building cues, buying parts and assembling cues, i know he was more than a assembler but he didnt build as much af the cue as Gus did and was operating a decade eariler, so its like compairing apples to oranges. I really like the 5 veneer Spain blank Bushkas I have 3 or 4 of them I'm sure its 4, maybe 3. I'll check tomarrow i'm in LA tonight. I like the patterns Geroge used in his inlays in the points, notched diamonds, I have one with a 6 point star thats very unusal, no body to this day did better wraps. ever. I like some of his satin finished cues too, and the use of plasitcs in the butt are cool. I could go on.

This is why its hard to say who makes nicer looking cues, Sugartree trees uses amazing woods to achieve a certain look, As does SW.

So many cues so little time....

all of the above in my opinion and is in no way meant to influence anyone to think something is better than other I'm just sharing my thoughts and 25 experience-in 83 I got a Hubler H-14 looked great, couldnt make a ball with it. And still havent found a cue I could make a ball with,,,,,ok maybe a few.

I will stop now. However if you want me to write more I'll be glad too share my opinions, I have alot left to talk about TADS, SW's, Joss East, etc. not all cues have to be rare big $$$ cues to bea amazing cues that deserve to be discussed, McDermott C,D series(thats what I know most about) if you want more ask me and i'll write glad to write more bad spelling and all. I'm also open to critics, If I say something wrong please tell me I want to learn, It dosent bother me a bit to be critized, insulted is different but hell I could be wrong about alot of things, tonight I think I was pretty spot on.

I have hit balls with about 7-8 current champions cues and can discuss them what I know of them, its brief but worth reading

let me know. I'm practicing my wrighting OMGWTF has helped me some, my other friend bought me a book and she said thats a good starting point. :)

....more cues than my wife can make any sense of for sure

....I've been buying/selling/trading cues for a few years here on AZ and on EBAY

I don't really keep track of the numbers -- they just seem to come and go with time

I've got way more than I can ever seem to find the time to play with regularly but, I do think that my game has improved over the years with trying out the different cues that I've acquired ;)

It's a GREAT HOBBY that has allowed me to learn more about how different types of cues play plus, I've met lot's of interesting folks that have helped me to gain the knowledge of the sport that I would have never been able to appreciate without being part of this overall process

I quit counting over a decade ago, pisses off the wifey. Her mind is usually put at ease when i turn a $200 dollar cue into a stack of 10 Benjamins. All I know is when i die, there will probably be a HUGE bonfire.

12-15 and like most others, it really took off when I came here and realized how many cues and cuemakers are actually out there. I've now settled on two Mike Webb's and that'll do it for me. Well, until I put in my next order with him and also when my name bubbles up on Joel Hercek's list.

Mizerak special from the BX on Griffiss AFB was my first. From there it was:
Meucci
Helmstetter(2)
Schon(2)
Jacoby
Sherbine SP
Viattorre
Sugartree
Skip Weston
Joss
Mike Webb(2) - only cues I still own

I'm interested to see what correlation there is (if any) between number of cues and pool ability.
There is no correlation. I would hope that only the insane would think there is.

Fred

Without putting it to a count, about 30, I think. I had four or five playing cues at one time, about five or six years ago. With little or no income for the past four years, I haven't bought anything new.
Should have added, I only have one now. Dan Dishaw, 6 point with three veneers, four shafts.

Yes, obviously. What I was trying to say is does buying a lot of cues and switching to the latest fads, fashions and technologies actually improve your game? Or does sticking to old faithful improve it more?

So for example, if you took 1000 people that owned one or two cues in the last ten years, and then took 1000 people that have owned 20 cues and kept other things constant like hours of play, would there be any difference in the increase in ability of the two groups.

Ive bought two cues, one of which was very recently and it was a BK2.

The other is my player, a Joss.

I think I've owned 14 in 7 years, but have bought lots more after joining AZ. I'm no great player by any means but can play some (APA 7). I would be only marginally better had I stuck with one or two cues since I started.
