How Many Pool Players......

Out there work manual labor jobs? How well do they play, the ones you know of?

The reason I ask is I own a bricklaying laying company , and after I have lifted 4000-15000 ponds in a ten hour day , it makes it really tough to have a good stroke. Most of the pros or A class players I have spoken with , has told me I wont be able to hit even 85% of my game as long as I do this type of work.

SO WHAT THINK YOU.

Hi Brickman, Always nice to hear about another contractor that plays pool. I own a Painting & Drywall business and it is pretty tough to have an A game when you are beat up after work. I actually try to get a quik nap before playing local tournaments or I am no good by the fourth or fifth match.
Over 50 and feeling it.... sometimes!!

I think it is totally up to the individual. I mean, same could be said for fat people. That their fat will get in the way, and they wont be able to play well.. Well, Danny Basavich does okay. Buddy Hall.. Etc...

So no, I don't think that is fact. A factor, maybe.. But nothing you could not possibly overcome, or be totally fine with anyways...

This question was brought up here before but only got a couple responses.

Hopefully with the start of the IPT, pool players will no longer have to resort to struggling with employment and be able to support themselves just playing pool... like any other professional sport!

Try going to the gym tonight and do curls and benching all night. Goto the poolhall tomorrow and see how your stroke feels

Actually I used to work construction, doing hardiplank concrete siding. Afterwards, I would go to the gym and lift for 45 minutes. After which, I hit the pool hall... And I had no problem shooting just fine... There are a lot of factors that would bother me more then sore muscles. For instance, the smoke, the crappy music, beer bottles being dropped.. Like said, it is subjective. Certain things will affect others differently.. Just so happens, muscle fatigue did not bother me..

Matter of fact, I actually felt a lot more loose and relaxed back when I was doing that... Now I have to work myself into a slow and relaxed pace...

I know how you feel, I'm a concrete finisher. Trying to pour 10,000 sq. ft. rush home, take a shower, then fly to the pool hall before the tourney starts has to put a damper on my game. During the summer when I'm working alot I still manage to play at an A- level, but in the winter when work is slow my game improves vastly. However work is slow so I can't afford to make it to many tourneys when I'm at my best.
A little off subject but whenever I play in larger tourneys I notice that I always get sick while I'm out of town. I'm not talking about a stomach ache, I actually start puking my guts out, but I'll be fine when I get home. I can't be homesick because I can't wait to go away on the weekend to play. What can I do to fix this cause it really hurts my game.

There's a job out there that's even worse to your pool game than laying brick...being a Dad =). Now that I'm the proud parent of a baby girl, my pool game is nonexistent. I don't mind...i'll just live vicariously through you guys. Competitive pool will forever be a game for bachelors. Question...are there any young parents out there who still have time to work on there game?

I have 3 kids and a wife who thinks I have a gambling problem. My kids are 5, 2, and a 1 week old baby.

I think you should sue your boss...then sit on your bum and collect unemployment and play pool!

That's what I do in the winter but finances just aren't there, can't think of a good enough reason to sue the boss but if you think of one let me know.

I bought so I would not have to leave them at night....The kids have seizures at night, I cant tell you how many tourneys I would have to forfeit the semifinal or final , and drive 100 + mph to get home :(

It not the sore muscles ( that is very rare, now after all these years :D ) I think it had more to do with muscle memory , and muscle spasms because of the repetiveness.

The one who really told me about this first was MOUNTAINMAN....he told me when he worked , his game really suffered , but once he focused on pool it stepped up several notches.

The reason this made so much sense to me , was when I was 15-17 years old I provided for my family by playing pool( MOM,DAD,3 SISTERS)....I would average about 2000 grand a month in winnings, and for a town of only 1500 people ( eastern ky) that was pretty good....any way dad , had been crippled in a mining accident,,, the coal mines caved in on him, and seeing all the financial problems this caused and onlY focusing on pool, I shot lights out.....but now after a 10-12 year lay off from even touching a stick, I cant seem to get my body to do what my mind knows how. Very frustrating, I am getting a little better, and I have only been back in the game since february, so maybe it will all work out.

BUT IT SEEMED TO MAKE SENSE TO ME?

been there

When I shot my best pool I either turned wrenches for a living or climbed iron and hung industrial insulation and sheet metal. However being young and in my natural prime I still shot pool more hours a week than I worked and I worked 40-50 hours a week. Nothing phased my game then. Drunk, sober, fresh, tired, sore, whatever, I played in all conditions so much that I made the adjustments.

I have quit pool and went back to shooting three times in the past. I am trying to get my stick back for the fourth time now. Like you, I am frustrated because I know what I am trying to do and sometimes it just won't happen. I do think that if you stay with it you will get your old pool game back or very close to it with your present work and physical condition. The real issues are time and desire. With a home table you should have time. No idea how hungry you are though.

I think pool is a physical game and your post points to it. I can't play pool if I've just worked out. Which means I can pretty much play any time I want.

QB's in football work out, golfers work out,.. The original poster lays brick, much different. The player that works out can moderate the workout based upon knowing they intend to play pool. The bricklayer, may just be overloaded with excess work on the day he plays making this much more difficult.

Even still, it is not just the physical stuff. Consider the boss who is running a job that has hosts of problems. By the end of the day, he is mentally exhausted. (other types of work too). There are many factors that affect play, we can only do our best in overriding them.

THANKS GUYS ....to those of you that took the time to answer me I appreciate it. :D

I guess when It comes down to it there are so many different answers that can " be right " to a single question in pool that its not even funny. I guess thats why everybody has a system a trick or just their own special way of gettin there.

THANKS AGAIN, MOST OF THE ANSWERS EVEN MADE A LITTLE SENSE TOO :D

I work at a desk all day long and, to be honest, I struggle playing during the week when I've been working. Even just sitting there working all day takes its toll to the point that I don't play as well after work.
