I need 20-30 balls before I can play decent pool,... I have to have my warm up... but I see some guys who walk in cold,... and shoot lights out from the get go...

how do you zone in on demand? ....or..... whats wrong with my game that takes me so long to get under control?

Hmmm... Don't be fooled...

Few players play well cold.. but don't be conned into- "I just got here, haven't hit a ball, but oh let's just play." Many players have a practice table at home, or hit them at another place prior to a tournament... in the case of Mankato... lol, probably just a home table. Knew I should have stopped in there last time I was there... After being up 24 hours, and finally having Rob kick my butt up in Burnsville, I passed over Mankato lol.

The ability to shoot well cold is a hard one to develop, and one that few players have. Maybe some of the better straight pool players will chime in and let us know how they do it.

Playing a lot of 14.1 or 1-hole might help. I've found that a little stretching can help some, and when playing cold for money, I try to focus and concentrate extra hard on every shot until I'm warmed up.

I just put my hands on the cloth for a few seconds to get a feel of the table, then roll a ball around the table a few times to check the speed.. then I'm good to go.

I always loved having the first match of the day on the second day of a tournament. Sometimes, the opponent is like a fish out of water. Either hung over or just not a morning person.

I think your right about concentrating better when your cold. I have had numerous runs in straight pool over 50 on my first trip to the table with no warm up. It seems I pay more attention.

I have never seen John Schmidt warm up before attempting to run a lot of balls. He just screws the stick together, sets up a break shot and goes from there. Have seen him run over 150 a few times like that and 403 on just his third attempt. Go figure.
.

I can't make a ball cold. Gotta shoot a couple racks in the hole before I get the range.

you need to be fresh to play down here ;) LOL

if you want to really test your skills... show up in Le Sueur at the Green Mill in the middle of a weekday afternoon... and challenge the old men at the bar.. they won't play for big money...but the money you lose will be well worth the lesson...pool rule # 12.. Don't think the old farmer can't play! LOL.. had a 10 footer in the farmhouse since 1910 stranded for months on end during Minnesota winter... you would be amazed at the skill that comes out of the woodwork *LOL* If you know where to look. LOL
