How many times have you seen someone run out a set?

I have never seen it myself and would love to see a match tape of it. And yes I do have an ulterior motive. I have asked this question everytime the "alternate breaks vs. winner breaks" discussions come up, but have never been answered.

But I am truly interested in figuring out how often it occurs. Any stories would be great, I certainly hope Grady, Freddy, Jay or anyone else some road or tournament tales.

I did once

Playing in a bar table event in southern In. the very first match of the tourney. I won the flip and ran 7 and out. I got out of line in game 5 and had to bank the 5 cross side, but got right back in line. My opponent wasn't too happy. I have a couple of friends who have done similar runs. But mine is the only time I actually witnessed it.

I have seen a few... I saw mike Zuglan break and run out 9 racks against Bill Dunsmore (a/k/a chicken man)

I saw Dennis Hatch do it once...Can't remember the guys name. with his though, he did not break the 1st rack. His opponent came up dry and the break and Dennis ran 9 racks from there also.

I had a local player put a 7 pack on me. Lucky for him that we were only racing to 7....lolol................mike

I've almost had it happen twice lol!

1st experience was my first open tournament- Went something like this:

He wins the toss, breaks runs out, breaks runs out, breaks plays safe, i kick make the ball, miss the next, he runs out so its 4-0 him, he breaks runs out, he breaks plays safe i kick, he runs out, he breaks runs out, he breaks plays safe, i kick he runs out. He wins 9-0 I got to the table 3 times.

Next incident another open tournament: Guy wins the toss opens with a 5 pack, next rack he breaks plays safe, i kick he runs out, he breaks miss's the 4 ball i run out, i break come up dry, he runs out, he breaks makes nothing i run out, So its 7-2 him, I break come up dry he runs out the rest of the set.

So in two sets I had 6 turns at the table out of a possible 21 games.

I've seen one set in person where the guy ran out the set and it was Jason Kirkwood. He went 11-0 against a guy.

In a little weekly $10, $100 added, race to 5, 9 ball tourney, I drew a solid player in the first round.

I broke and ran 5 on him. On the loser's side, he drew a very strong player who broke and ran 4 on him.

In the fifth game, his opponent broke, made a ball and played safe on the one. This guy kicked at it, hit it and his opponent ran out.

So, for $10, this guy got one kick shot.

At one of the McDermott stops years ago, David Matlock was playing a guy who I can't remember his name.

The guy opened up on David with a six pack. He came up dry on the 7th game and never got out of his chair again except to rack.

Parica

I watched Jose run 8 racks of 8 ball for $50 a game...break and out, 8 in a row. His opponent never hit a ball.

When and where did you see Bob and Scott do this? I'm just curious... I'd like to read the stories.....

3-times, the last one I saw is in youtube between Alex and Yang. Alex never got to shoot.

Vanover in the mid eighties in Austin, Tx. and Kitto in the early nineties in Memphis.

Vanover's 9 and out was in the finals for the state championship while Kitto ran 7 racks during the RACK's ( now SAMPLE's) annual SUPER BOWL event.

I've heard other's ran 7 and out in the Memphis event.

> It seen it a couple different ways, either they ran out the whole set from the beginning or started a run during the match at some point and won the set in that inning.

Shannon Daulton-race to 5 9-ball on an 8' Schmidt. Shannon had just won the Legends of One Pocket against Bugs, and the Lexington All-Star,and showed up with his mom, dad,Alvin Lawrence from the SW shop,Buddy Hall's brother Ray,and a couple other players at a 15 dollar entry tournament in Kennett,Mo. Shannon went for 450 in the calcutta, and had to play a guy that went for 5 bucks in the calcutta in the finals, true double-elim. Shannon broke and ran out the whole first set,but caught a horrible roll and lost hill-hill in the second.

Pete Horne-race to 5 at the same tournament a month later. Pete also ran 14 racks on the same table before the tournament in a 2 dollar a man,3 handed ring game.

Dennis Hatch-race to 7 9-ball on 9' GC-I,1993 tournament at Starcher's in Akron.

Very strong upper Kentucky player named Eddie Adams, race to 5 9-ball on 8'
Steepleton at a local tournament once held on Jackson,Tn,multiple times. Eddie destroyed everyone he played there, running out a race to 5 at least once in every monthly tournament for almost a year. Even with players like Ray Schultz and Tony Watson showing up quite often,Eddie won it so much they had it in parentheses "The Eddie Adams Open" on the flyer.

If were talking about running out a set already in progress,I've seen Jim Rempe put an 8 together and close a match.

Earl Strickland-probably 10 times I've seen him close a match with 5 or more, including once against me.

Buddy Hall stole a match from Archer at the U.S. Open once, after trailing 7-1,he got it back to 7-4 with safety play and ran out the set from there.

In the very first tournament match I ever watched other than my dad,Mike Sigel ran out a race to 11 against Rick Garrison after Garrison came up dry on the break at 4-3,so a whole rack plus 7 from the break, and basically had ball-in-hand the whole time, you can't play Virtual Pool any better with the tracking turned on.

In my own game,I've ran out a race to 5 with ball in hand on the 5 in the first rack, and finished a race to 13 gambling from 9-8 after my opponent just ran 6 racks to go up 9-8. I had a 4 rack run in that same set,so a 5 and 4 in a race to 13 on a 8 foot GCIII. Tommy D.

It happens on a bar table alot more than you think! I have been around alot of pool and have only witness it done on a 9 ft once. Mark Tadd playing in 91 or 92. I have seen Shannon Daulton do it twice on a bar table , race to nine same day!! Nick Varner in Chattanooga,Tn in 1991 race to nine. Also some others for the cash in head sets that probaly doesnt want their names mentioned!!

Yep, just two weeks ago three road players were out. One of the three did break & runs mostly. The other one was a 3C player and had beaten a regular. The last one did quite well.

It was nice to watch.

I have actually seen it twice. Shawn Putnam did it to me in a race to 7 on an 8ft table a few years ago playing 9 ball and I saw Ike Runnells do it against Shannon Daulton in an 8 ball tourney last year. Pretty impressive.

Southpaw

I can't remember the player's name but his nickname is "The Dancing Bear", I believe. He's from Canada and he ran 11 racks and out in one of the Camel events. Archer ran 13 racks and out against Busta in a gambling match.
I can remember twice that I did it: Once against Buddy in OK City and once against Cole in SoCal. Those were both 6 ahead sets.
