i was wanting to put an ivory joint and a leather wrap on my joss, and was wondering how much it would cost me. thanks for the advise

and why do some say it doesn't need to be refinished after a joint replacement? mike gulyassey said it did and he is the one that usually does my cues just looking for some more prices

I think that the rules of this forum have changed in that AZB requests quotes be relayed via PM. Not sure. Anyway, In case you don't get any pm's with offers to do your work, I would venture to say that this work would probably cost you somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 give or take a little depending on who you get for the work. Good Luck

Most generally you'll be looking at $250 for the ivory joint. Leather wraps usually go for around $100-$150 for standard leather & up quite a bit for exotics. Some guys might be cheaper. Check with Rat Cues on here as he does a great job for better than fair prices.

By George, I think he's got it !

Have a great day Ryan.

I guess I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the reason we are not supposed to post prices in an open forum. If someone wants to run behind the scenes and undercut me, so be it. My prices are posted online and in a couple million catalogs a year. So what's the difference? What/who is it hurting?

<~~~sorry for the hijack

No high-jack! No rant! just an opinion that I wholeheartedly agree with.

lets hear your price dick!! the one with the cheapest aint gonna win my stick. cheaper is not better for me anyways

See, right here is one perfect example as to why the new ruling is in place; bidding wars.
I don't need the money and I don't need the work so I won't get into a bid war with anyone on this site so it doesn't affect me, but for those that would, ultimately you're hurting yourselves. Do it via PM and no one is the wiser.
Do it behind closed doors and it ain't no bodies business but your own.

I haven't seen this question asked, If I missed it, I'm sorry, But does your Joss have a stainless joint and do you understand the weight difference and balance point factors? And Mike Gulyassy is good people.

I do very little repair work outside of my shops area (Cincinnati and surroundings ). I can only remember making one shaft for someone on this forum. There are plenty of local repair men around and it is dangerous to ship a cue any more than is absolutely necessary plus the added cost of shipping, handling and insurance will eat up any slight price advantage. Although I have posted prices of what I charge for simple services such as tips, ferrules and such I have never sent a PM to someone looking to have something done and if someone should PM me I give them the same advice. Look for something local. Much cheaper and safer in the long run.

Also, I very seldom build cues for forum members. I believe I've only built three or four over the years and have turned down building at least a dozen. Through the e-mails or phone conversations I have to feel a re pore and that we both are on the same track in what the customer desires and what I feel like building. I enjoy what I'm doing. I live frugally and don't need the money and I don't need any aggravation nor drama to change my out look.

I have never felt that posting my price has hurt me. In fact, I get residual business because of it. I think the people doing the griping are the ones with inflated prices. The bidding war is going on whether it is open or PM. I guess I'd rather see the wolf in the house....

To answer the OP's other question, the joint does not necessarily need to be refinished. Some of us can blend the new collar with the original finish. You can refinish the cue, if wanted, but make sure you are comparing apples to apples when you are getting bids.

<~~wishes I didn't need the money....

i normally stay out

of the wars, but this time i have to agree with ryan. i cannot see any problems in posting your prices.

First, let me state that I don't set the rules, I only have to abide by them.
Any disagreement or requests for modifications of said rules should be taken-up with those who set them in the first place.

I should clarify my earlier statement about not needing the money. I also live very frugally and since I'm a single-man, I don't have a family to support.
That said, Sey keeps me busier than Santa Claus. Building my own cues IS ALWAYS on the back-burner because of the amount of work they send me.

So my wish to you Ryan is that you get all the work you want, or can handle.
But be careful of what you wish for, the stress can be a killer. Particularly when you're as dedicated as you are.

I've said it many times. I'd rather be a little behind in my work than a little ahead. For me, it isn't about money either. I do it because I want to. It causes no stress because I love what I do and cannot see myself doing anything else. I crave the challenge.

A new ivory joint will require *some* refinishing.
A new steel joint could be installed without refinishing, perhaps this is what whoever told you what they did was talking about.
