Thats cheap. I have been charging $40 to remove the tip, cut or true new centers on both ends, cut shaft on cnc tapering saw machine, sand and reseal and polish shaft and install new standard tip. I don't like to sand down shafts I prefer cutting. I don't cut down shafts that have too much runout to be cut true during the process.
I see several cues a year with shafts too warped to turn true and I refuse the job due to the potential for bad publicity. If I do it and the guy goes out and tells all his buddys I did the job all they see is the warped shaft. They don't know it was worse before the work was done. Also cutting a shaft with too much runout will produce an odd outer diameter shape due to not being cut evenly all the way around. Chris.

This is off of Mike Webb's website regarding turning down shafts:

TURN DOWN SHAFTS......FIRST 1/2 MM...........$30.00
EACH ADDITIONAL 1/4 mm.............................$ 5.00

His website is http://www.webbcues.com/...go to cue repairs section

Hope this helps. Dave

$40 is pretty much standard for a correct & professional job.

Until Jan. 1 I always charged 25.00 including a new standard tip for re tapering over a 1/4 mm as I did it on the shaft machine. A 1/4 mm or less I do just by sanding after turning the ferrule to size. This I charged 15.00. As of Jan.1 I raised my price by 5.00 to 30.00 and 20.00.

This is the first I have heard that the standard price was supposed to be 40.00 though for a correct and professional job.

Me and Dick must still be in the stone age, because I've been charging $25 too. More if the new tip is layered.
If the old tip is firm enough, cut your center in that, then you don't crater the ferrule out with a center hole.

Certainly didn't mean to infer that I was speaking for all. I was quoting prices that "most" charge because "most" do not have CNC machinery. The ones that do, certainly have a more efficient way of doing the job.

Also, what constitutes a "correct and professional job" Mr. Varney?

Wow! I must be older than you guys. I was charging $20 for a machined cut on a shaft taper. Time to raise prices. $30 sounds fair.

I always remove the tip & epoxy a 3/8" thick wafer of maple to the ferrule. I cut a fresh center in the maple before machining the shaft. It only takes a few minutes & leaves the face of the ferrule like new. When shaft is finished, just face off the maple & replace it with a new tip.

Chris Byrne's method is good, but as he mentioned it can't be done on a shaft with very much warp at all in it. Before taking on any re-tapering job, roll the shaft on the table in front of the customer. Show him the warp. This is important because you can retaper a warped shaft using the sanding method, but it will not get the warp out. You would be surprised how many customers have never rolled their shaft at all until they are inspecting your re-tapering job. Then they blame you for the warp. I learned that lesson early on and make them look at it before I touch it.
I usually charge $25 plus tip if it is under 1mm being taken off. If it is sanded they don't have to have a new tip. If I am turning it on the tapering machine I center drill into the old tip to give the turning center on the tip end.

Since the question involves 1/2mm I would turn the ferrule to 12.7mm & then sand(with 80 grit), til the shaft is flush with the ferrule. Then sand ferrule & shaft with 220, 320, 400, 600,1000 & finally 1500. Burnish & seal That usually brings me right to the desired size. I also ropll the shaft before the customer leaves the shaft, for the same reason as Chris stated...JER

Me too - I've been charging even less ---- guess if you're an old guy you remember when gas was $.32 not $3.20 ---
