How Not To Hustle

Today I got approached by a guy which I thought just wanted to play some pool. We got playing and talking and I thought he was a pretty cool guy. He was friendly and cracking jokes...my kinda guy. Whilst we were playing for fun I notice he isn't very good, so I give him a chance and dog a few balls, run out of position for fun just so he got some table time.

Then he asks if I want to play for £5 a game. I said sure, with the intention of winning a few then letting him win a few so we eventually break even. I win the first 2 and he offers to up the stakes to £20 a game. Again I agree thinking ill get ahead and let him come back. But wait! He all of a sudden realises he's left handed after playing right handed all this time. In my head I'm like nice try buddy. I then bring my A game to him and he ends up losing £300 after an hours worth of play.

What a dumbass. Tried hustling me by playing bad with his off hand. Maybe me being nice and playing bad to give him table time was some sort of a counter hustle? No way would he have put money on the table if he knew how I would play. He wasn't a great player, C+/B I'd say. It made me laugh. Its rare people will approach you for money out of the blue here so in the back of my mind I knew something fishy was going on. Is this a common hustling tactic? Never seen it before. Usually people just play bad with their normal hand.

Moral of the story? Don't try and hustle if you suck.

Probably watched too many pool movies and thought it was easier than it really is.

And he figured that you wouldn't notice him switching hands. And then he only brought a C game with him.

Were you playing for Pounds? If it were Lbs, that comes out nicely in Canadian money. If it were Lbs of marijuana, that comes out even better. Not that I would know anything about that and such, coming from the grow capitol of the world.I have a cue repair shop in my basement.

My 3 lathes don't make the power meter spin like a helicopter.

The only way you can be hustled is if you are trying to hustle.

When shooting a weaker player(for funnsies), do not miss balls to give them a chance. You can shoot with the opposite hand. If that is still too strong, intentionally leave yourself hard or even hook yourself. That way you still get good practice and they get to shoot some. (Not to be used as a stalling tactic in a money game.;))

Ha yeah we were playing for lbs. If only it was lbs of marijuana I wouldn't be posting right now, I'd be raiding my kitchen for nachos and melted cheese. Ahh that takes me back to my university days :)

Pidge, you should see my Munchie cupboard. You'd be impressed.

Nachos and cheese. Now ya got me thinkin.

Yeah... I'll never try that on Pidge again.
Aww man! I'm sure you'll get me next time.

You just had a bad day, the pool gods were against you, the table was uneven, you had a bad nights sleep, I cheated, you felt sorry for me, people kept walking in your eye line, the air con was too loud, you didn't want to win, your chalk was wet...and thus concludes some of the funniest excuses I've ever heard!

Yeah I guess it must really suck when you shoot C level offhand and only C+ with good hand

Doesn't make sense because he can't pretend the sudden increase in skill is actually "luck" or "I just suddenly started having a really good day". It just screams "I was screwing around before". Ideally you want to at least leave some doubt in the other guy's mind.

I thought about mentioning this to him as he was emptying his wallet, but I decided not to.

Everything he did was different. I didn't notice the change in hands until after his first break. I wasn't looking at the time but the sound of the break was much louder than previous, so he obviously slammed the crap out of it.

Leaving doubt in the other guys mind is what gets the other guy to come back for more. Hence why this guys is the epitome of how not to hustle.

! He all of a sudden realises he's left handed after playing right handed all this time.

I used to do a version of that hustle, but instead of putting my cue in the other hand, I would just hand it to another player and hope you didnt notice :D
