Consistency is something we all strive for. The assumption is as you get better you get more consistent.

I've been on a good streak the last few months. Last 2 outings were sub par.

So how often do you have a bad night ? Does it last just that night ?

My recollection would have been MUCH easier if you would have asked "How often do you have a good night?" :o:o:o:D

Happens to me all the time. But I figured I'll always be inconsistent since I don't play all that often so I learned to live with it. It doesn't bother me as much now and I force myself to focus on how to recover ASAP - going back to basics, enforce my PSR on every shot, go slower, focus on one ball at a time, etc. Now usually I'm able to recover fairly soon into the game.

Interesting timing. I just had a bad day Tuesday. Not terrible but certainly not up to par & a bit 'painful'. (I even won all the games, but it was ugly)

Usually when I get into a bit of a slump I just play through it. I don't even try to figure out why because it shouldn't even happen. Usually my game comes back fairly quickly. The one time it did not come back quickly was because I had had an eye accident 2 weeks earlier & developed an astigmatism. I found out rather quickly what the cause was when I covered my non-shooting eye.

To answer your question, bad days or nights do not happen that often but they do pop up now & again but do not last that long.

I thing the reason is that we get a bit lackadaisical & loose a bit of focus. It's kind of like focus is saying, 'don't take me for granted or I will leave you'. We start focusing and the bad day or night is the one that leaves.

Regards.

I don't know about having a bad night, but I've been in a bad mood for the last 10 years. LOL

No bad nights for me

I used to have bad nights. Now I play only in the daytime.

Actually, I do play only in the daytime, because most of the venues in my town get very smokey at night.

I play pretty much every night, either at home or league. What I've noticed is that my consistency pretty much follows how well I'm able to focus on what I'm doing. Unfortunately, I played for lots of years just banging the balls around without really focusing on all the fundamentals that lead to consistency, so it is really easy for me to slip back into that mode. I still do that kind of intentionally prior to league play or at home when I'm playing less skilled players, just shooting fast and loose. It can get kind of scary how consistent I can be after playing that way for a few games, but for league, I really need to slow down and pay attention. I think it's the nerves that come into play as well as the down time between games/matches. If I remember to slow down, I do okay, and I can do okay sometimes playing fast and loose, but I can also frustrate myself to no end jawing point balls in the pockets.

I've also noticed that if I'm very tired it can have a negative affect on my game. As I focus more on focussing (LOL), my bad nights are getting fewer and farther between.

What I have noticed in my own play is I have playing sessions that are great, OK and bad.

The quality of play difference between a great session and bad session has gotten tighter, but the frequency of the great, OK and bad cycle seems to be the same.

My wife pointed this out to me. She would see me get upset when I thought I played bad and said your bad play is still pretty good.

I have noticed

that about 1 weekend out of a month, I will have kind of a down night. I might shoot okay, but just okay, and not good enough to get into the money in weekend tournaments that I play.

Quite frankly, I blame it on my Biorythim being out of whack.

I know it sounds cocky but, I really don't have them.

Sometimes I'm not in the mood to play and in that case I'll just shoot kinda meh. But it's not a bad night, because I'm just choosing not to shoot with full care and attention. Being lazy and basically just banging 'em around with friends.

When I do try hard, I seem to be pretty consistent, haven't lost in league in a long time.

I think it's important for players to avoid certain mental concepts like "bad nights" or "funks" or "slumps". They only happen if you believe in them and give them power over you. You take it ball by ball, there's no reason your next shot can't be perfect, or at least as perfect as you're personally capable of.

let's see, i play bad when i am;
really stressed out
not wanting to really play that night
not focused on the task at hand
playing against some "babe" with short skirt and boobs hanging out
against some really slooooow player
waiting an hour or more between practice drills and actual play

that about sums it up, the rest of the time i shoot the lights out! :happydance:

I don't have that many fingers and toes. Lol

If you over-rate your game, you'll have a lot of bad nights.
If you under-rate your game, you'll never have a bad night.

Statistically speaking, if you're accurate, then every other night is a bad night.

...just sayin'
