How often to use a tip tool?

I lightly scuff my tip with a Willards at the start of each session, if only for nothing more than peace of mind.

A miscue is an unforced error and if you wait til you miscue before you work on your tip, well you dogged it. A good player told me that years ago.

Meanwhile I still dog it in this manner, although less than before he told me that. I use my tip tapper before every match if I can remember. Most of the times ive dogged it and miscued, its been because I didnt chalk up well enough, which is of course dogging it.

So many ways to dog it in this game.

VERY Rarely do I use mine.. Maybe every few months and I play a LOT of pool..

I would hazard a guess to say that over 75% of all miss cues are not because of an improperly scuffed or shaped tip.

If I miss cue, then I didn't hit the ball right.

When I need to shape my tip, it's mostly because the shape is a little flat and I'm not getting quite the right spin that I'm expecting. Of course, that could very well be all in my head too. Just like how I used to think it was my tips fault when I miss cue'd.

I know some weirdo will claim 'never', but he is a maniac.

I do mine about every 4 hrs of play, or if I miscue.

Never.

Every 4 hours is a little much. At the most, I scuff with a piece of 200 grit sand paper just enough to take the shine off the glaze.

For reference, I use a black king med tip and have only miscued from not having chalked.

I only touch it when needed. I might use a tip pick every couple weeks, maybe, and that's only if I notice the tip doesn't seem to be holding chalk as well. I will burnish if it seems to mushroom a bit, but the tips I use (everest, kamui) seem to do that initially after installation and then are usually pretty good after. And I will shape if the tip starts to flatten out a bit, but that's after months of play.

Ideally, I barely touch it for the life of the tip. But I know guys that scuff, shape, poke, etc. almost every session, to each their own. I just figure the more I mess with it, the faster it wears down and the more likely I'll do something stupid and f@#$ it up...
